    THIS IS VERY TRUE. pentium is for home/business work. or media stuff. AMD is more for gaming guys.

    Intel= 3.0Ghz * 6 Ops = 18*10^9 ops per second
    AMD= 2.0Ghz * 9 Ops = 18*10^9 ops per second

    That is the main reason to clock speed diffrences.
    yea tht is true too. i dunno y but i go faster than my friend who has a p4 2.8GHz. LMFAO. i have a 1.8. i would get the AMD FOR SURE. intel has let me down ALOT for 4 years. got a new comp around janurary 05(AMD) and has NOT let me down ONCE. i am goin wit AMD 100%.

      Exactly correct...there are tons of tests that have proven AMD makes a rockin' chip for gaming..

        A64's crush Intel for gaming.

        The A64 X2 crushes Intel in business apps, streaming apps, encoding/decoding. X2 multi tasks better than Intel, thus negating the p4's primary advantage: hyperthreading.

        AMD for the total win. Long live the king.

          AMD's dual core will severely crush Intel, unless Intel comes back with something, and fast. Unfortunately for AMD their dual cores are also more expensive at this time, however they more then make up for it with the fact that they are compatible with the Socket 939 which is compatible with SLi, and other new technologies.

          As for the whole 3200+ and numbering system, AMD is pulling something simular to what Intel does. Intel tells you the clock speed, which is important, but since AMD's clocks are so much lower, and people usually judge a processor on clock speeds AMD had to find a way to make people think their processor was equivical in speed (which they are) to Intel's chip. AMD more then makes up for the lack of core speed with better architecture, higher FSB speeds, and lower power consumption (which means less heat!).

            Your right there. Why don't you switch over to AMD now King?

              I don't have the money right now, I have to pay for school and things coming up here, plus I just got a cel phone which costs me a bit of money.

              I do plan to switch to AMD with my next machine, and trust me, its killing me to be running this P4. I have spent about $150 just on cooling solutions alone ($300 if you include my new case).

                i had the 9800 pro sold it got a 800xl and didnt notice much difference to be honest both played at full spec with no pixal mess up or nothing.
                but im currently running my p4 3.2ht with 4 gig of memory as well an a sata hd :p

I have heard that a athlon processor is more prone for gaming and people think just because the operating frequency is higher on a p4 means that the processor is better, but that is not the case. For example a amd athlon 64 2800+ or 3000+ is actually equivilant to a p4 2.8ghz processor. I do wonder why this is so, post ur thoughts on this because it just perplexes me that these processors have so much of a power difference between the two.

                  ive had both an swear by the pents there way better.the amd 64 i found way unrealable with most programs an games as not soft ware was made at the time of 64bit cpus but i surpose in time to come this is all changin but my cash stays with pent al the way

                    whats the point of spending all that cash on a system that sust built 4 gaming sounds a bit of a waist of cash.when ya got the shitbox an **** station out a fraction of the price!
                    dont get me wrong i love me FPS on the me pc but i also use my pc for other things as well as gaming .
                    so for me it would def be the p4.
                    my m8 as a amd3.2 an i haVE a p4 3.2ht an mine waists his in every way.
                    the main diff is the price amd cheap crap. p4 ya get what ya pay 4 a top q cpu.

                      Two words:

                      Spell check.

                      Let me try to translate this to English so those reading after me, won't have to spend 10 minutes decifering what the hell you just said.

                      I've had both (AMD and Intel) and swear by Pentiums. They're way better. The Athlon64, I found, to be way to unreliable with most computer programs, and games, as most software was not made for 64-bit CPUs. But I suppose in time this has all changed, but my cash stays with Pentium all the way.
                      Now to rip the statement apart (as if it needed it, it was barely a cohesive in the first place).

                      I have had 3 Intel systems so calling me a "fan boy" of any sort is out of the picture here, so you can forget that argument.

                      The Athlon64 did have some issues upon its release, but since then everything has been smoothed out. The Athlon64 processors are both 32-bit and 64-bit compliant, so there shouldn't be any reliability issues with any programs what-so-ever. My guess is you splurged for an Athlon64 when it first came out, and bought some shitty motherboard and stuff to go with it, which caused the problems. Let that be a lesson to you, don't buy technology on the first generation. Wait for the second, as it will correct all the issues with the first generation (in this case socket 940 vs 939).

Therefore AMD is faster. Think about it like this, a 3200+ is slightly better than a 3.2 ghz HT P4, but if you could OC the FSB speed to 1ghz like the AMD's on the P4, the P4 would PWN the 3200+. But that's nearly impossible, you'll be idling at like 70 C, so i wouldn't count on it. And i never knew that Pentium does good on benchmarks. That's why my bench marks suck so much. I prefer AMD chips, the Athlon 64 processors are also cheaper than their Intel 64 bit capable (surprised that Intel already has 64 bit chips, if so, you really got to research the newer intel processors) processors, aka the 6xx series instead of the 5xx series that came out a couple of years ago. For gaming purposes AMD owns Intel, unless you could OC the fsb speed to 1ghz on the intel CPUs.
                            WTF are you on about

                            1. AMD's dont have a 1Ghz FSB, the new Intels do. AMD 64's use dual channel PC3200 ram equalling 800Mhz. New Intels run on DDR2 ram and when in dual channel get over 1066Mhz. AMD's do not beifit from increasing the FSB, but instead benifit from agressive ram timings.

                            2. I have a pentium 4 2.4 Northwood (The last GREAT pentium series) and I have a 1 Ghz FSB (OC'd by increasing the FSB to 250 - 250 quad pumped to 1Ghz). The AMD 3200+ would wop my cpu even though its overclocked and has a 1 Ghz FSB.

                            Anyone confused about AMD Vs Intel should read what Toms Hardware Guide has to say about this, they have tried to answer this question. THG - AMD Vs Intel

                              Maybe it might not be FSB speed, but the newer AMD Athlon 64's have 1ghz FSB speed, here's a link:

                              The title of th processor clearly states it's 1ghz FSB: "AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail"

                              It definetly has 1ghz FSB speed, it may not be the main difference between P4's and Athlon 64's, but it is a difference.

                              EDIT: BTW, Front Side Bus (FSB) does not mean RAM speed.

                                ok i have done a little bit of looking and that AMD with 1 Ghz system bus is only sold on Newegg from what I can gather. I did find a review of the 3000+ and it said its fsb was 200 (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Revi...rticleId=14693. Even in dual channel the system bus of that thing will be 800Mhz, nowhere near the 1Ghz quoted by Newegg. Is that a typo or just a new processor that no-one has heard about. Toms Hardware Guide has said nothing about it.
