I have heard alot about both pentium and amd and im familiar with both and what most people fail to reconize is the major difference between the two processors and the way work is handled between the two. I have heard that a athlon processor is more prone for gaming and people think just because the operating frequency is higher on a p4 means that the processor is better, but that is not the case. For example a amd athlon 64 2800+ or 3000+ is actually equivilant to a p4 2.8ghz processor. I do wonder why this is so, post ur thoughts on this because it just perplexes me that these processors have so much of a power difference between the two.

im not sure, but i do prefer amd over pentium...but one thing i would like to know is, why do you want the radeon 9800pro??? why not go for the radeon x700-850...im not downing the 9800 because thats what i had before i got the x700, but now im ready to switch again....just wondering

Intels do 6 operations per clock cycle.
AMDs do 9 operations per clock cycle.
Intel= 3.0Ghz * 6 Ops = 18*10^9 ops per second
AMD= 2.0Ghz * 9 Ops = 18*10^9 ops per second
That is the main reason to clock speed diffrences.

If you use applicaitons that do a lot of mathmatical operations such as compression/decompression, ripping, file conversion, DVD crud then a P4 will work for you better, If you are a gamer then the AMD is right up your street.

The higher clock speeds of a Pentium will get you better performance on highly iterative calculations, ie. When the next calculation depends on the last one, say when calculating digits of pi. In this case, being able to do a lot of IPC (Instructions Per Clock cycle) will not help, as the CPU will need to wait for the result from the last clock cycle.
In games, there is a lot of different calculations that needs to be done between each frame render. This is where a high IPC is beneficial, and the AMD chips have the upper hand.
The Pentium chips also have a long instruction pipeline (20 instructions are queued at once). This is good if there is a lot of predictable or repetitive calculations, as the chip can reorder (optimise) the instructions, or spread them out to idle parts of the chip (hyperthreading is a refinement of this technique). This is often a disadvantage however, as if a "IF->THEN" jump instruction is made, the remaining instructions queued up are then unneeded, and it takes time to flush the pipeline and requeue the new batch of instructions.
In games, with "random" user input (moving mouse to look around) causing large changes in what needs to be processed, it is very difficult for the CPU to predict the instruction flow, and so ends up emptying it's pipeline more often than usual. This gives Pentiums a performance hit, and the AMD's win out again.
Generally, for desktop (office) work and games, the AMD chips will win out. For artificial benchmarks and media encoding or rendering (often optimised for P4's) the Pentiums will win out.
The AMD Athlon chips, especially the Athlon64/Opteron chips are a much better and more efficient design than the Pentium-4.
Just look at the Pentium-M laptop chips. They are a modified P3 design, and run faster than the P4's, even though they too run at a lower MHz speed. Intels crazy new model numbering scheme shows that even they know MHz doesn't mean a thing these days.

I know this is gonna sound rly nooby, but ok.. i have heard that there is now the dual amd motherboards... etc.. but is there a amd/intel board and does anyong know if this is even possible? As that would give you the best of both worlds.

I have never heard of such a thing and I don't think it could ever be possible enless you had two seperate cpu sockets on a board as intel and amd use totaly different sockets.

Just remember that Elitegroup (ECS) motherboards are generally total rubbish, aimed to the OEM market who want the cheapest parts they can get. This board is meant for budget system builders so that they can buy 100's of the one motherboard, and then offer AMD or Intel chips depending on the customers desire.
And no, you can't run one of each processor at the same time...

WOW, i'm surprised nobody caught this. I have three letters explaining why AMD processors are faster than their mhz Intel equivelents, FSB (Front Side Bus) speed, Intel has 800mhz FSB speed, while AMD has 1ghz FSB speed. Therefore AMD is faster. Think about it like this, a 3200+ is slightly better than a 3.2 ghz HT P4, but if you could OC the FSB speed to 1ghz like the AMD's on the P4, the P4 would PWN the 3200+. But that's nearly impossible, you'll be idling at like 70 C, so i wouldn't count on it. And i never knew that Pentium does good on benchmarks. That's why my bench marks suck so much. I prefer AMD chips, the Athlon 64 processors are also cheaper than their Intel 64 bit capable (surprised that Intel already has 64 bit chips, if so, you really got to research the newer intel processors) processors, aka the 6xx series instead of the 5xx series that came out a couple of years ago. For gaming purposes AMD owns Intel, unless you could OC the fsb speed to 1ghz on the intel CPUs.
