Tough choise...6800Gt or 7800GTX

I'm about to upgrade my display adapter. I currently have A64 3500+ (venice), Asus A8N-E (Nforce4 Ultra, PCI-E), 1 gig Kingston DDR 400 MHz and loaned 6600GT 128 Mb.

I have narrowed my choises to two cards: 6800GT and 7800GTX. 6800 Ultra is out of the question, because it's so easy to overclock 6800GT and the price on both 7800GTX and 6800 Ultra are about the same.

Ok, 7800 is definitely the fastest card there is, but is it really worth it to spend like 150 Euros more? What I lose if I go for a little cheaper, but overclockable 6800GT?

Any opinions?

I previously had ATI's card, but this time I go for Nvidia's offerings.

7800 is only avalible in PCI-E your motherboard does not have a PCI-E slot so you would be better of getting a 6800.

Personally Id stick with the 6800GT. Its a very good card and the price is now pretty good. There is not enough power differnence between them at lower resolutions to warrant the extra. Wish I went for the GT but got the plain 6800, then again there was £120 difference at the time last year.

Sorry my mistake, but if you are looking to spend the extra cash then go for the 7800 as it has 24 pipelines! it will last you a while before you need to upgrade again as it is currently the best graphics card on the market.

PCI-E is more popular than PCI now. its a way of making more money off of you

Sorry my mistake, but if you are looking to spend the extra cash then go for the 7800 as it has 24 pipelines! it will last you a while before you need to upgrade again as it is currently the best graphics card on the market.

That's good aspect, It's almost certain that I wouldn't need to upgrade again for a while.

Previous card I had (Radeon 9800) was good about two years and the main thing that forced me to upgrade in the first place was BF2. FPS is life :p

Yep, all reviews I have read confirm this, it's about 30-40 % faster than 6800 Ultra and even beats 6800GT SLI...

I always prefer to skip 2 generations of Gfx card......you see a far better difference in speed. If you only play at 1280 x 1024 the 7800Gtx is only 20% - 30% faster.

Although the 7800Gtx has 24 pipes it only has 16 ROPs which is the final process after the pixel process which means in theory cant fully use all 24 at the same time.

I still want one tho.

Question is when ATI gets these new cards into the market. I use loaned card now and I need to get me a new card asap.
