If you can, Wait for AMD's Bulldozer to be released along with new AMD boards that will be backword compatible to previous CPU's. Due to start shipping around April.

AM3+?? Not yet another socket?
They might as well drop the illusion and weld the CPUs to the motherboards, it is getting harder and harder to upgarde anything without getting a new MB

I can understand why they're doing it they want to maximize the performance of Bulldozer and cant do it on the current boards.

Hopefully it will be a case of buying a new board in a few months then in a few years still being able to put a 12 core cpu in it

What are you guys doing where you need so many cores? I would think just about anyone who needs more than 4 cores should have a business expense account for their computer. Not many people have hobbies that warrant the use of so many cores. Gaming is definitely not one of them.

OK, Im putting on my wizard hat and looking into the crystal ball here:

I think with oil skyrocketing now, PC parts are going to go up within a month.

You need oil for plastic and for delivery of said plastic.

Prices may not go up, but, I dont see how they wont. They may go back down after all this stuff is over.

Intel has already released the upcoming prices and they are going down.
SSD HDs are also going down in prices.

I'm having trouble locating it again as the web is saturated with price drop information. But it did link directly to an intel news article.

I don't think sandy-bridge will be dropping in prices though as compared to $900 processors it's better for stuff like gaming. You'll probably see another price drop for 6core processors in the next three months while prices continue to slowly go down. The processors that are for business consumers will have a drop in price so that people like gamers will buy them. These price cuts will be by the $100s of dollars and not be affected by oil because they are already considerably overpriced for the companies who have the money to spend.


When I said going down I mean some are going down but none are going up. Well looking at some of the prices I think some of them must have just dropped in February. 970s and 960s.

i would go with the ASUS Crosshair IV Formula motherboard and an SATA 6GB/s SSD.

Well yeah, if money was no object I would go for an Intel Extreme too.

Also, Asus makes the "higher" end boards in "lower" end models. For instance; I had the P5E board that had the same bus, chipset, and close-to-same BIOS features as their Maximus line, which was $100 or so more.
