Playing 1080p videos

I'm having some laptop troubles whilst playing 1080p videos... So I'm just going to post my troubles here because no one ever checks the support section...

So like I said, I want to watch 1080p films on my laptop, but every-so-often the frame rate drops to **** and the video starts stuttering like crazy. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
8GB RAM DDR3
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 - Crossfire X - 512mb each.
Vista Ultimate 64bit

And I remember when purchasing the screen resolution was 1920x1200, allowing 1200p or something like that, although I could be wrong (about the 1200p)

I'm using VLC Media Player.

Might want to open the vid player, play a video and open up task manager and take a screen shot of the processes tab. There might be another program running in the background that could be causing the isssue.

Also check under Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and look at your list to see if the VLC player has a related plugin or video Codec.

And of course there's always checking for vid card updates and vid player updates.

What is the model/brand of your system or is this a built one?

Was it you that emailed me their Dxdiag file before? You know how to make one and can email it to me?

Also, has it worked before and stopped working or never tried it?

Yes, it was me. However the last updates I have done were the ones you recommended, and I am absolutely 100% retarded at updating drivers and stuff and when I try to do a Windows Update I get an 800700002 error or something like that... It happened with my last laptop but when I went home my internet there fixed that problem. I narrowed it down to my school's proxy being retarded, but when I took my current laptop home I got the same error...

I'm pretty sure I can remake one and send it to you.. Are you still at the @yahoo?

EDIT: Does anyone know a decent image hosting site that keeps it at the resolution you took the screenshot at? That is some BS right there... It should be 1920x1200....

You want to try 24Hz because most movies are shown at this refresh rate. See if you notice any differences.

Your computer might be trying to save power.

The only frequency I can have it at is 60Hz.

It looks like disabling Aero seems to have done it, but I haven't watched a lot of the movie, just bits of it - and there wasn't any lagging.

probably has to do with a combination of things like drivers, codecs and vista

See how that works out and if that works, we can work on checking some drivers and updates and see if we can get your Aero back. Thats what makes Windows 7 look great

It could just be VLC. For whatever reason, it doesn't like 1080p videos or videos with super large file sizes that aren't on a DVD. Try, and you may hate this, try watching it in Windows Media Player and see if that helps. Oddly, it's helped me when I need to watch super large/HD videos on my machine.

Its imo the best video player out there.
