Okay ignoring all that spam, I actually managed to fix the card. All I did was reinstall the drivers and I don't see any of those flashing pixels and flashing colors engulfing my screen anymore. The Control panel also has none of those color obscurities flashing on and off in the image preview settings. Im getting a new graphics card anyway, but it's nice to have i function for the time being.

The nVidia 8xxx cards, as someone mentioned, had some issues with heat degrading the chip/card contacts. 8800's generally had bulky, loud, and--importantly--decent coolers, whereas the 84/8600 went out of the factory with weenie fans or (gasp) passive cooling. No biggie with the old material, but the new stuff just wouldn't hold up to heat over time. Linky for more info (you can keep following the links for all the gory details), but full disclosure, these folks and this author in particular are no big fans of nVid.

Back on topic, glad your issues seem to be worked out. I would not be surprised, however, if they came back. Meantime, keep your case as cool as possible. And yes, the 9800's are free of the problems that plagued the early generation (which wasn't actually a generational change...but that's a different story entirely, lol). If you can pick one up cheaply, they're more than adequate cards, although the rest of your system is quite weak for heavy gaming. I personally prefer ATI from past experiences, even though I turned my nose up at them during the dark days of the expensive, hot, and watt-sucking (among other things) 2900's.

The issue you speak of was limited to mobile NVidia GPUs (i.e the ones used in laptops). If multiple video cards are not working, the first thing I would look at is the power supply. In the OP's case, it certainly seems that the power supply is on its way out.

Yes the problems have returned, the obscurities are back and its about to crash anytime now as Im typing this. The fan constantly makes a loud humming noise. Please check out my other thread on what gfx card to get, would like some input deciding since you guys are more knowledgeable then me on this topic. I got a new power supply anyway, going to put it in a tomorrow, its an Ultra 550 pro, LSP lifetime series.

They 'glue' their mobile chips to it's electrical contacts/support substrate using the same process as in desktop models. The material just failed, on average, faster in laptops than in desktops due to typical heat differential, so it was a big warranty (read: LOSS OF MONEY) issue for their shareholders because they were obliged to either compensate Dell, HP, and Apple (etc.) for the failed components or (less likely) compensate the end user. nVidia figured that if their product managed to last until the warranty was up in the desktop segment, no harm no foul.

In any case (lol, get it?!) those cards that have full-fledged cooling solutions in a well ventilated enclosure should last weeks or even months past their warranty expiration :)

@ Cassisus55, you have tried giving the card/fan/heatsink a good blast with canned air already, right? just asking...

No, I got no mobile fan, house Im in is air conditioned. The problems have went away again as I see new obscurities in the image preview in the nvidia control plane, will be getting a new one anyway so these problems will be a thing of the past.

He meant the fan on the card.

You can get them cheap on amazon etc or local stores. Just means cleaning the fan of your gfx card to make sure its not full of dust, which will cause it to overheat.

Yeah. If you haven't tried cleaning the card--

                          1) carefully take the card out

                          2) hold (carefully) one of the fins on the fan to prevent it from moving

                          3) blast it with canned air (compressed air) anywhere you see dirt, dustbunnies, or anywhere you see a crevice where there could be dustbunnies.

                          4) reinstall it (carefully)

Most cards fail because of overheating. Overheating is mostly caused by junk (dirt) building up on the parts that are supposed to conduct heat away from the chip. Giant dust bawls hanging out on your card (i really ought to edit that, but i just ain't a-gunna, sarge...) are kinda like dressing it up in a nice fur coat and then making it run a marathon in the summer.

I put in my 9800GT, works fine with my new power supply. Great card. In the future when I upgrade my comp Ill just SLI it so I won't be getting a new graphics card for about 3 years.

Except you can't SLI in that PC.
