I really like Kapersky's new suite. I paid $50 for three licenses in June after doing a lot of research...it's not as light as some of the others, but it does bring some additional functionality (that you may or not need/decide to run). It's comfortable enough so as to be unnoticeable on my wife's netbook.

Avast and AVG have worked great for me in the past. My wife telecommutes (different laptop) most days so I wanted a little more robust anti-AV/Malware/Firewall to make sure we didn't get our pc's hit with something that would spill over into her enterprise setup.

Thread has a lot of replies but I'm just going to throw in my experienced opinion in.

To really be safeguarded today you need to be able to stop a threat that you usually let happen. This means when you start getting pop ups at odd times and odd virus alarms, your real antivirus sees something or you start getting locked out of stuff in windows and ect. Many people want to run that virus scanner and hope it's going to do it's job. Nine times out of ten that antivirus has already let you down and running it is a waste of time while your computer is being manipulated in ways that kaspersky, avast or any other virus scanners can't handle during a normal boot. Not only is windows being manipulated but your only "trusty" prevention to your problem is also being manipulated as you try to fix the problem.

The first thing you need to do is shut your internet down and reboot into safemode. It's a good idea that you find out how to get into safemode now than later. Keep your programs updated always.

After I'm in safemode I would start a scan with MBAM http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and quarantine anything that is infected. This program will put a stop to the problem getting worse. You need to log everything any program quarantines/fixes/detects.

After MBAM I would run a scan with SuperAntiSpyware.

Then I would run a scan with Avast.

Then I would reboot again and run kaspersky online scanner.

I would do a bit more with other programs that those with less experience would more than likely do more harm that good with. I advise anyone that may be a noobie to this stuff to get MBAM do the reboot into safemode run that scanner quarantine and then get help from like http://forums.whatthetech.com by following the new post instructions.


If you are going to purchase an internet security suite then kaspersky's is top notch but I wouldn't be caught with just that installed on a computer I might get a virus on.

The fact is that they are making these malware specifically to get by specific programs like avast or kaspersky. It doesn't mean having these are bad because what they can't keep out they can usually at least notify you or stop working in a noticeable way that says hey..it's time to reboot into safemode.
