Some Uni's block different ports so he might not be able to use Skype at Uni... I know I wasn't able to get on Teamspeak, Xfire, or any online game when I was on campus...

Wouldn't getting your Parents to jump on Skype and then loading Skype onto your phone work? You'd just have to pay the internet usage (which if you're getting unlimited data plan would be "free" / included in your monthly costs)

Since Skype-to-Skype is free, but not sure if it's different for Skype on mobiles?

Dan is right if you have unlimited Internet Usage and your phone supports skype then your skype to skype calls would be free and a lite version of skype is avaliable for Blackberry Smartphones which also allows you to send messages to your skype contacts so you can IM your family aswell through it however im struggling to see where you are getting the £100 cheaper for 12 months?

From what I can see your 24 month contract if split into 12 months comes out at £354.83 whereas the Bold 9000 with Orange is £35 a month for 12 months which comes out at £420 and then £69.99 for the phone which takes it to £489.99 or am I just confused about which one your talking about?

Cant you just use the unis internet for comms? Skype headset and webcam = family fun tiems?

All of you are right, I will use Skype/MSN Messenger for the free calls, but that is only while I am at my home.
Which happens to be a good 30 minutes away from university, so I won't be able to 'pop in' for a call.

Though Blackberry doesn't have Skype support yet, I will be using the mails, built in messenger (with my father) and the e-buddy messenger , which is basically a java/flash based webpage that connects to MSN.

It's 20 pounds a month, so 480 pounds + the value of the phone = 480 + 119.99 = 599.99 pounds.

It is a good deal tbh, but Alex raises a good point about long contracts. There is bound to be a better phone/better contract in a year.

Don't feel bad, Vika, the UK wireless system is complicated even by US standards. I shell out about $60/month for iphone with unlimited everything. Worth it.

It's confusing and rather expensive.

But the iPhones in the UK are uber rip offs tbh, the minimum starts at 34.99 (which is around 55$?), and that has limited texts and calls with no data support. I was like, wtf.

Wait. I seem to have made the worst mistake in maths possible.

The 24 month contract is cheaper over the long term too.

The 12 month contract is like this:

Phone: 69.99
Monthly: 35
12 months: 420
SO, total is 489.99

Therefore, 489.99 over 12 months is 40.80 pounds a month. (average cost per month)

Now, the 24 months contract is like this:

Phone: 119.99
Monthly: 20.00
24 months: 480.00
Total cost: 599.99

599.99 over 24 months is 24.99 per month (average cost)

Eh... I now believe the 24 months contract actually is better?

Depends on your contract. A cheaper contract and the handset might cost you, a more expensive contract and it'll be cheap/free.

I text anywhere from 2,500-5,000 a month.
