im sure your current hardware can hold for a while, and i highly doubt the next gen hardware will stay at that high price. what are you new here? prices for stuff like this always drop after a while. everyone knows that by now.

I just had about $200 to burn before my motherboard fried and had to get a replacement. What? Am I verboten from buying a faster CPU with my own money? Heck, I have no debt AT ALL!

so im wondering....when did you feel the necessity to upgrade your hardware?

Just like when you feel the necessity to buy high-end sound cards.

I finally fixed the water and was able to put my Phenom 9850 to 3GHz (15x200, 1.35Vcore). However, Prime95 4 thread simply gives me BSOD. I could put more Vcore and see if it stabilizes, but as the temperature already hitting 50C, I don't see much point running at that state 24/7, even if it could stabilize.

Conclusion: get Phenom II 955 after Core i5 comes out in September.

Keep playing around 9850. Use msconfig to disable one core. Now I'm running a quad as a tri-core. The voltage needed to run 3.0GHz is decreased to 1.35V from 1.45V. Run tri-core in 3.0GHz with 1.3V (stock voltage) proved unstable while running prime95 torture test.

Down to dual core setting. It can run 3GHz at stock, but it is now noticeably slower. Good for game, but not for anything else. I'll do a power consumption check on quad, tri and dual configuration. Since the other two cores are probably running at CnQ speed (1.25GHz), it really don't cut power saving while idling.

How did you manage to use MSCONFIG to set the number of CPU's? The only setting I see in there is the number of CPU's in the boot.ini. That simply limits what Vista uses to boot.

By default, it uses all available CPU's,but for troubleshooting and software development, you can limit the number of CPU's used to boot.

You are right that it's a software thing. By setting number of processors in boot.ini, it limits the number of cores used by Vista's thread scheduler. It essentially limits the number of cores used by Vista. The unused cores should receive NOP all the time, thus reduce overall power consumption of the processor.

Setting the number of CPU's in boot.ini only limits the activated ones during boot. I fail to believe they are disabled for the rest of the time.

Run Prime95 with SS's to prove, i'm not sure I believe that.

They are not "disabled," but rather put into idle.

BTW, NOP is an x86 assembly command which, well, states that the CPU should do nothing for the cycle. CPU core gives itself NOP if nothing is in its stack.

Just found this. There are some reports said that certain older AM2 board, including yours, do work with 45nm Phenom II.

Drop AMD go intel... Seriously I was a AMD whore until last year. Started with a q6600, went to a qx9650 to i7 920 and recently purchased a D0 stepped it 920

OC to 4.2 Ghz @ 1.3v. With ease and love it. I was an AMD and ATI fan and well blown away once I went Intel for the 1st time last yr. My previous i7 took 1.37v at 4GHz.

I am waiting for my MCR 320 and Heat Killer blow on Friday to add a single loop for my CPU. Gonna push that bad boy as close to 5Ghz as I can. 4.6 at 1.6v is my best, but not comfortable with it that high.
