    CPU upgrade suggestion

    Should I upgrade to:

    Phenom II X4 955
    Phenom II X3 720
    Phenom II X4 945
    Phenom II X3 940
    Phenom II X4 925

    or stay with 9850?

Depends what you're doing and whether the 9850 overclocks very well.

The problem is that my little HTPC board doesn't do overclock well even with water. It doesn't allow overvoltage on Phenom. If I fix my water system on a 790GX board, than there's some chance that this 9850 will hit 2.9GHz. Nevertheless, with 940 or 955, it's almost certain that it will hit 3.4GHz at stock voltage. Plus Phenom II runs faster than Phenom at same clock speed.

I have the 790GX chipset with the 940 and it is a great overclocking pair. I could get from 3.0 to 3.6 with a +.05 increase in voltage and stable. I dont have it Oc'd though.

            I don't think Core i7 fits into Socket AM2+.

Can AM3 cpu run on a AM2 motherboard?

                Nope.....
You still need a new motherboard. Fortunately, some AM3/AM2+ boards are cheap. If you want to go with AM2+, check whether the board supports Phenom II. You still need a new copy of Windows, though.

I might have damaged my motherboard while doing stupid tweaking in the morning.

Probably I need motherboard suggestion instead of CPU suggestion now. Maybe it's time to get an ATX and 790GX. Need to fix the water as well if that's the case.

                    Re: CPU upgrade suggestion

Finally got my rig "fixed." Took another call to Microsoft for activation (the down side of buying OEM copy). Since the motherboard and case have spent my budget for new CPU, I guess I have to wait for a few months before I can come up with new CPU upgrade.

So, instead of a $90 solution to get a motherboard and get back to action NOW, I should wait for a season and spend at least $400 on CPU, motherboard and two sticks of DDR3?

im sure your current hardware can hold for a while, and i highly doubt the next gen hardware will stay at that high price. what are you new here? prices for stuff like this always drop after a while. everyone knows that by now.
