has anyone had a application that wont run because it has not been digitally signed by microsoft, XP just tells you that it is but vista totally stops you from using it

I assume you mean it won't run because the driver isn't digitally signed. It's a security feature which stops poorly written and potentially dangerous software from running.

It can be turned off upon boot, but it isn't worth it unless you really need to run a legacy application.

Starforce's protection drivers (the ones it tries to silently install without informing or asking the user) aren't digitally signed, and won't work.

They work fine for me...

I have them on Trackmania United and it Starforce installs fine.

Not all Starforce software uses/installs the drivers. Games like Trackmania don't use the drivers, while other games, like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, do.

eeuuurrrgggh i remember those starforce drivers with micromachines V4 they where really lame. Some people reported that they actually damaged hardware but im very sceptical of these claims.

The common arguement is that the drivers slow the drive down to speeds far below what it's meant to operate at, which can cause damage to the motor. Whether or not that's true, I have no idea.

Like my mum! (literaly) She downloaded a virus once. I do hate UAC though, but, for someone who works infront of a computer, my mum can be clueless on anything to do with computers except typing

I run Windows 7 with UAC turned on, but I always turn it off in Vista. I get annoyed with the constant popups, which seems to be fewer in Windows 7.

I also run a real-time Antivirus (Avast) in the background.

I also usually have XP running anyway

In Vista UAC was really annoying with any and all unsigned apps, regardless of what they wanted - I was on the verge of turing it off when I just sacked it off for the "7" beta/RC. Now the only prompts I get are for programs that required network/disk access (City of Heroes, C&CTFD exe's, etc), but everything else day-to-day I've never seen a prompt for, exactly the way it should be.

UAC is the closet MS will ever get to a proper LUP system, without upsetting the mass market.
