NVidia Chipsets?

I have been thinking of upgrading my video card for a few months. I keep waiting to see how things pan out with all the new versions, but its become a bit more confusing now and I dont know if it will ever sort out.

My current system:
Asus P5E
Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4GHz OC'd to 3.0
4 GIG RAM at 1033FSB
EVGA 8800 GTS 512 card

Ive been looking at the GTX 260s and 280s. Then they come out with the 275s and 285s. Now there is a GTS series running around.

I think going with a 285 would be overkill with my system. I dont plan to SLI it or anything like that. Makes me think the 280s may be a bit over the top as well.

Has anyone heard anything about the 275s? They have under a gig of RAM, but the specs look good from what I have seen. Pretty good price too.

Im afraid I just dont know much about all these new cards and time in researching them is a bit limited. So, hopefully you guys can give your 2cents.

As for going with an ATI video card, I can't do it. I'm sorry. I'm sure they are awesome cards and work great now, but I was burned on them way back in the day and I havent forgiven yet. Maybe one day

The 260 or 275 would be ideal for your system. The 28x's would be overkill for the CPU you have. At least, this is what I've been told given how I have the same CPU as you.

260's run about $200 while the 275's are about $50 more and offer up performance a bit closer to the 280 line.

I like the 275 overall. It seems like it would work well. I think you are correct Zips on the 280s being overkill. Maybe if I had I higher end dual core or the new i7s.

I even looked at the 4890s but they are just about the same price and since I cannot forgive and forget, Im still looking at the 275.

So anyone know why they made the 275 series? Other than for money?

Compete with the 4890 and as a refresher to the line up really as the 260 is getting pretty old now. They didnt really need to release it because its not THAT much different but hey...

So its like an upgraded 260? If it had a gig of RAM on it, it would almost be a lower end 280. At least looking at the specs it would be.

The main thing which has changed which seperates it from the 260 is the stream processors, there is 240 in the 275 rather than 216. The difference between it and the 280 is the membus bitrate which is 448 rather than 512.

The clock speed changes are neither her nor there really as most 260s would overclock to or very near those speeds anyway.

I think all 275s will be 55nm wheras unless you get EVGA its kind of pot luck with the 260s, doesnt have any real world implications to performance and very little to heat and power usage but its still nice to know :).

It's actually pretty easy to get a 55nm 260 card from EVGA. They have the model numbers and descriptions right in their own storefront and at Newegg.
