Acer still does it I think...or at least they did so when I bought my comp about 2 years ago

Well my Dad has an Acer laptop and has put in more RAM, and he can put in a new hard drive without voiding the warranty. I'm not sure if that counts, though, since it's a laptop.

If i was totally loaded i would buy a macpro and a 30" cinema screen but other than that i would always build myself its just too much fun. Im always a little dissapointed when i finish cuz i just want to sit and build forever!

Dell doesn't void when you opened it. When I had my Dimension, I just rang them up and said, "i'm upgrading my hard disk FYI, is this okay?"

          They said, "sure"

What? Push pins are great. You've never tried installing a heatsink with a hook clamp, have you?

Anything socket 370 or older should have them.

....The only thing harder than getting them on is getting them off.

              NO WAY! :rawr

Push pins are teh sux! They can come out and they break easy. Its also hard to tell if they are ready to be pushed in or if you need to turn them and get them prepped.

At least with the hook clamp you knew it was on.

I had a different experience with Dell during my last call for my uncle about a year ago. I called them to tell them I was upgrading the RAM from 2 sticks of 512 to 2 sticks of 2GB and they told me doing so would void the warranty, if i wanted a ram upgrade i would need to send the whole tower in and let them do the RAM upgrade. It would cost around 400 dollars.

Re: Would you buy prebuilt if you had the money?

When i had the money i did for the first time in over a decade buy a pre built machine. It was an Ultima Sli from overclockers, an Athlon 64 4000, dual 7800GT's, 2gb ram and still not a bad box for its age even if its been out classed by a new build.
Fair enough, more of a custom build than an off the shelf box, but if you have the money and like gaming you dont look at the Dell website.

There is something about building your own PC that is great, but after a while there is something nice about simply ordering a new machine that will turn up and work. It makes you feel like you can understand the beast when in reality all you have done is stick together Lego bricks without the faintest knowledge of what they really do.

So, if i had the money, i would pay a man to stick a computer together for me and sit through the tedium of formatting and installing an OS, it is hardly interesting after you have done it a few times.

When I went on their forums asking about putting in new hardware they actually encouraged me to do it and gave me recommendations lol. Official dell reps, too.

Has Dell changed to ATX cases and mobos yet? My Pentium D Dell is BTX.

They don't take the collective effort of 3 people to remove them, though, so they're great in comparison to the older means of attaching a heatsink to a socket.

I spent £1700 on a Custom Pre-Built Machine, have had nothing but problems with it, they put dodgy RAM in at first.

After that my PSU Blew, damaging my motherboard and probably CPU, the company decided they would replace the PSU but not the MB or CPU - im now running a half dead machine.

To turn it on i have to hit the power button leave it run for about 10-20mins then press the restart button in order for the machine to actually boot the OS.

                                The Joys :-).

Also the nasty little NVLDDMKM error has interfered with my game play I hardly play on-line games these days.
