I find the SC and SSC class cards from EVGA usually run cooler than the stock cards because they are from a better batch.

Oh and Alex hit 10000 posts...

It's not as if the new clock speeds are written to memory on the card or hard printed there for engineers to find, it's all Windows controlled so if you have to RMA, they won't know any better.
What if the card dies when you OC it and you can't clock it back down to factory settings? Won't they notice it then?

Read what he said again. The overclock is not stored in the card anywhere. If you take that card out of your system and put it in another system the card will be at stock clocks.

This is because the overclock is controlled by software, not by hardware.

The same is true with CPU's, the BIOS controls the overclock. If you fry a CPU there is no way for the manufacturer to know if you actually overclocked it at all.

I think they'd only notice if you tweaked with the BIOS to mess with the voltage. And if you don't mess with your voltage, I doubt there would be permanent damage.

so if you ever want to RMA your card but it's not actually broken could you OC until it breaks, and then send it in?

Why would you want to RMA a working card? That makes no sense... If you want to RMA just to get a new card, you are very uninformed. Manufacturers do not send out new cards as RMA's then send out refurbished cards.

And 2nd, if you did want to do this, why even bother overclocking it, just tell them you are getting artifacts in all your games and you want to RMA.

You cannot overclock a graphics card until it breaks. The only way you can damage it is by increasing the voltage. Simply increasing clocks will just cause crashes, but no permanent damage.

Sure you can, so you are saying you cannot overclock til the card hits 120C and fries the chip permanently? I have done it myself.

Increasing core speed does not increase heat. It is voltage that makes the difference?

Well whenever you turn the clock speeds up, the temps rise as well.

Have you ever actually overclocked a card? Or is that a typo?

I was mistaken, apparently it does increase temps, although not hugely. I always thought voltage was the main reason for temp increases.

I guess you could suicide clock it :p

Well actually most cards cannot take more than 100mhz overclock on the core clock without volt modding it, that is not to say all cards can only go so far, I have seen GPU-Z Validations at 200mhz or higher on the core. However overclocking and volt modding are two completely different things. Volt modding is with the BIOS of the card itself. Volt modding is the quickest way to kill a graphics card, not only because of heat, but also because the GPU core is extremely sensitive to higher voltages.

I overclocked my card from 675, 1625, 1000 to 800, 1900, 1300 one time and the temps didn't increase at all. My FPS in the Crysis benchmark went up by about 10 but there were lots of artifacts and CTD with driver errors.
