100% cpu usage...

In BF2 and L4D I am getting 100% cpu usage. In L4d it is sometimes 100% constant but in BF2 it spikes up from 80% to 100%.

Is this normal?

are you looking at individual program usage or the general graph?

I'd say that's normal. Unless it's remarkably affecting your performance and you suspect something is wrong then games use up as much power as they can.

Seems odd for that to be at 100% with BF2/L4D...

Not likely the game is using that much.

However if you have say XFire, MSN, AIM, or even a web browser open, then it is very possible it could happen.

If CPU usage is low when on desktop, then there is nothing to worry about, the more cpu usage the better, im having problems with a couple of games that dont make use of the CPU very well, therefore my frames are hit badly

Is it both CPUs in BF? As BF isnt multithread capable there is no way it should be 100%

I'd hate to see what happens to your computer if you tried to play GTA IV. That thing drains half a city block when playing.

BF2 uses both cores equally for me.

Wasn't it proven that BF2 was single threaded and only switched which core it uses because of Windows or something like that?

I'm not too sure about that because if that were true, then wouldn't it be like that for every game? (which it's not). Either way, though, both cores are being used equally during BF2.

try turning the affinityto both cores off and see if it drops any frames :)

Try using hardware rendered audio.

I found that switching to software audio (in BF2) meant that my core #1 was always 99% during gameplay.

With my X-Fi, you should be able to use hardware and alleviate pressure from the CPU :)

BF2 should be set on X-Fi (ultra high). Remember that you need to use "game mode" to be able to use X-Fi mode in BF2. That should reduce CPU strain.

I'm not sure about L4D and i can't look since i'm on my laptop. But, make sure it is using your hardware rather than software via CPU.
