New Router = No Tinterwebz :(

hey, afew days ago my router died (1 day after guarentee ran out.. yay) so i bought a new one, my problem now being i cannot connect to the internet on either pc's (able to gain access to internet if i plug my Ethernet from my virgin media box to my pc)

last time i had this problem it was due to vista blocking both pc's for some reasons and i cant really remember what i did, any of you know how i can get around this?


id post my IPCONFIG /ALL but the command box closes as soon as it opens :s

erm, opening command prompt by goin 2 start menu and clicking run.

erm media box = Virgin Media Broadband Box

and the router is a SOHO Profesional 4 Port 10/100Mbps

for whichever reason, when i stick the Ethernet from my Virgin Media Broadband box to the pc running windows Vista that doesn't detect the internet even tho its directly connected to my Broadband box, would this be a simple setting blocking it?

Did you always use the same ethernet ports on your PC?

Sometimes when I boot my PC up it sometimes does not notice my router is connected to the net, by disabling and re-enabling the device in Device Manager (located in Control Panel) it fixxes itself.

In vista, to open command prompt, just type cmd in the start menu or in run.

Do you have one computer plugged in to the other?

Also, default gateway and DNS does not match. Usually bad, unless you're using custom dns servers.

I think you are contradicting yourself? Can you get internet directly from the box or not?

Also, default gateway and DNS does not match. Usually bad, unless you're using custom dns servers.

I checked on my own Vista, and the default gateway is my own router, so it should not match the DNS.

To understand the situation, could you please explain exactly what the Virgin Box is, and how you were connected before?
My guess is that it is a broadband modem to which you connected the old router?

Meanwhile here are a number of issues than one may encounter when connecting a router to a modem:

1. Some Routers need a crossover cable to connect to a modem, others do not.
2. The modem may have bound your IP address to the MAC address of the old router, and wont let it go. That can be handled by cloning the MAC adress of the old router
3. The router is configured to get a IP address automatically (DHCP) when it should be configured manually, or vice versa
4. If the modem has a built in router, the extra router may conflict and should be used as a switch instead

Also, together with a ping of 209.85.171.100, a tracert would be interesting

By default, your computer asks your router for dns info, then your router asks your modem, then your modem asks your ISP.

i can connect to the internet directly from the box on my Windows XP system fine, but not on my Windows Vista system.

Virgin Box is my Broadband Modem and yeh, its what i connected my old router to

Is that trace done with the router plugged into the link or straight into the modem, looks straight into it to me...

First let me ask what type of internet service do you have? (ADSL, Cable, FiOS, etc.)

If the router is the problem, the old one was probably configured for your internet provider type, while the new one isn't. You may need to clone your MAC address, depending on how your ISP assigns IP addresses.

Indeed, what kind of connection do you have to your ISP (PPoE, etc). That could matter.
