new cpu time!

Hello

i want a new CPU, because I've been told my current is bottle necking my 4870
so I've checked the Swedish market and found this one:

I've heard its a great combination between the multitasking properties of the Q6600 and the great game performance of the E8400

I've also been thinking about saving up for an i7 system?

your advice would be helpful

Go for a Q9550, i hear they are awesome overclockers although more expensive .
MyIS Dan just got one.

But, if you're considering i7, you probably have enough money. Core i7 isn't worth the money yet, i'm waiting for the second generation i5/i7 chips before i make a move.

They are coming down in price soon, yeah just as I buy. So maybe wait?

I did get mine to 3.8 but RAM was not stable, might be because of the amount of sticks I have or maybe some more volts are needed for the NB, but right now I'm running @ 3.4 with all volts set to auto. :)

there are lots of good reasons to buy a quad-core or a just a faster cpu even, but i really doubt your oc'd 6750 is bottle-necking your 4870 unless you're running at a fairly low res with fairly low settings. even if it was at stock, if you were running above 800x600 with a few notches of aa and af, you're going to end up gpu-bound--not that you'd notice it, at that rez we're talking about the difference between 150 and 130 fps

how to find out? run some benchmarks using some of your favorite games (edit: not the stuff from futuremark*eting) at a decent rez starting at stock and then overclocking steadily. by the time you get into the 3.0-3.2 ghz range, i'll bet nine and a half dead pixels that you aren't seeing anything but the smallest of incremental improvements in your frame-rate.

video editing, compiling, etc...yeah. a fast quad is going to help depending on the software.

just do yourself a fav and make sure InternetJiMmY gave you correct advice on bottlenecking before you splash out.

Don't get the lower end 45nm quads, they have less cache than the Q6600 and are more expensive. If you want a 45nm C2Q, get the Q9x50 series, which have 12mb cache.

Q9x50 is better now and in near future for people with LGA775. Unless you want to build 2x GTX295 rig, don't bother with i7.

Intel's Core 2 Quad Q9650 processors are now priced at US$316, a 40 percent drop from December. Other Core 2 Quad chip prices were cut between 16 percent and 20 percent. The quad-core chips are used in high-end desktops like gaming systems.

So I think it would be a good idea to wait a bit.

Well intel dropped their prices considerably and then AMD have just done the same thing to counter it... could see further reductions from both sides!

It's a game of limbo that AMD probably knows better than to partake in. They don't have the resources, money or manufacturing capability to win in a situation like that.

But they don't have the technology either to hold their own. They have to compete somewhere!
