Maybe I'm just imagining things, then, since I never have a problem making head shots. I've only noticed it a few times, and I remember that it's usually when I'm lagging...

so is raising the in-game sensitivity like increasing the DPI? In same games like UT3 I have high in-game sensitivity because I have to be able to move and look around really quickly, but in games like BF2 I have it set to default (which is significantly lower than what I have UT3 set at) but it works fine since it's generally much slower paced.

Well, the higher the DPI, the more sensitive the mouse is. So, changing the DPI on the mouse actually changes the way it works, changing sensitivity in games merely emulates the same thing.

Yup, a possible 5 different combinations, however, if you plan on using them in game, you'll want no more than 3.

I in fact only use 2, one very high and one very low. I switch between the two just before i'm about to shoot :)

See i have always wondered if this is true. I think that when you use the DPI switch button, what the mouse does is actually emulate a lower DPI and infact the sensor is always running at its highest rated setting.

The way the DPI would change would use a method called interpolation and im not sure if it would be done on the CMOS sensor or electronically inside the mouse.

It's done via the mouse. I know this because when i'm using Linux or some other half-arse OS, it will still change DPI even without Setpoint installed. Obviously though, it defaults to the basic 3 settings that come with the mouse.

So in BF2 when I'm sniping it seems the the crosshair is on a grid and it can only point to certain certain dots. It's like that on my desktop, too, but the "grid" seems to be a lot smaller on the desktop. My mouse can point to every single pixel on the desktop, but in bf2 it seems to clump it in like 4 pixels.

Would higher DPI change that?

I used to get that alot too.. I found going to control panel > Mouse properties > pointer options and then checking the "enhance pointer precision" box fixed it.

Setting my DPI to the highest and then setting the in-game sensitivity a bit lower also made it a bit more precise for those really small movements..

But this doesnt change my question/query/theory whatever you want to call it, because it was all internal to the mouse and didnt relate to the software anyway.

What i was wondering is do the buttons change the way the electronics read the information from the sensor or do they change the way the sensor works itself.

The resolution on my MX518 is selectable from 400 to 1600 in steps of 50 (using setpoint). I cant see the sensor being able to switch like that. AFAIK it is basically a small digital camera.
As for interpolation, sure you could do that, but why waste all the processing power when you can get the same result by just multiplying the X/Y output by the scaling factor?
