EEPROM's are read only memory and therefore the data could not change for each disk. The actual volume name would probably come from the hard disks BIOS (each component has it's own BIOS or firmware). It's that, that reports to the BIOS i reckon.

Thats what i was referring to when i said about the on board firmware before, i think you thought i meant the motherboard firmware which is where we have got confuzzled.:dead:

Oh, i thought you were talking about the bootstrap, sometimes held in motherboard EEPROM chips. I'm not sure if they are even used anymore :p

Which brings us onto another point. Does the BIOS look straight to the hard disks MBR or does it have to get info from a chipset on the motherboard containing addresses first?

I just don't know.

Interesting question but i cant think where it would be stored if it was on the motherboard.

Is there a unified MBR format across different hard drive formats/opsys'? If there isnt then surely it must be stored on the hard drive.

Yea, that's what i was thinking. Unless there is a protocol which defines what address a MBR is stored at, you couldn't have it take the info from a read only EEPROM chip.
