I get that approximate score, with a PC that probably cost far less than that.

Weighs 11.55 lb, roughly like an M14. If you consider AC adapter for that thing probably also weigh up to 4lb, that's like carrying an empty M249 around.

Well no duh, that's a pretty weak argument. Compare the size of PC to a laptop, I'd say a lot gaining the same performance of a PC is well worth any price between 2.5k to 3k.

The reason I got my laptop over 7 years ago.

If you want a laptop to take to classes with you for notes, etc, and actually to USE it for that purpose. You can't get a good gaming laptop. They will be way too heavy, and you HAVE to have external fans to keep it cool if you do plan to game.

Go ahead and spend over $2000 on a HEAVY laptop that can play Crysis, Fallout 3, and CoD4 when I could build one that could do the same for half the price. Just don't expect to carry it with you wherever you go, and use it for 8 hours. :p

That's total bullsh!t and you know it!
There is no way you can consider BF2 to be cutting edge in terms of gfx performance. When it was first released TWO years ago in 2006, but not at all right now, in the present.

How much did you spend on that laptop?

I spent less than $1000 on my entire PC, including themonitor, and I scored just a bit above 12000 on 3dmark 06. Look at my stats on the side:
Core 2 duo at 2.8 Ghz
              2 GB of Ram
              single 8800gt

I don't see the rape anywhere? Could you please point it out for me?

I built a machine that can run 3dmark06 up to 14100. E8200, DDR3 2GB 9-9-9-24, 8800GS in SLI on nForce 790i. The system is well under $1200 with 19" monitor, and that was back in May.

But he wants a lappy for gaming AND college, yes?
That means carrying around a big 10lb or so laptop everywhere or a portable laptop that can't play games very well.

                  Therein lies the problem.

yeah, that guy is running a quad core, 4 GB, and dual gfx cards and gets the same score. That's not worth the extra money.

Wait what... you mean carrying a 10lb laptop that CAN play games well, that's the whole argument here, several high end Acer laptops can play several games on medium - high settings. They are a tad heavy, I'd say about 5 - 6 kilos, but what are we, ****ing malnourished handicaps?

I don't mind sacrificing weight for a laptop that can cope with good games, I don't see people carrying desktops around...

If you take it purely empirically, a laptop that can perform at the same level as PC, but costs more is purely justifiable, the extra cost is in the fact that it is PORTABLE. Granted, you are paying quite a bit more than one would, sacrifices have to be made.

60% reduction of price/performance may be good for you, but I regard it as unacceptable.

No, but for the price of a gaming laptop you could get an equivalent desktop and have enough leftover for a basic laptop for portability.

And you really have no valid arguments here. Of course a desktop is going to be far less money I have one myself that is pretty damn fast. But the whole point of this thread is a guy asking which gaming laptop is a good buy (he wants a laptop). sure I can set my case down flat put my lcd on top of it with my keyboard and mouse and walk it around but my laptop i can just close down the screen and throw it in the bag. 14lbs ... common don't be ******* you may actually gain some muscle that would suck..

But on a serious note laptops have their advantages and if you're a big gamer and want the ability to pack up and go in 2.5 seconds its a laptop you need. If you're willing to pay the price its on you.

You keep your laptop and I'll keep my cheapotop. The fact is that most of us can't justify spending $3000 on a laptop, BECAUSE WE CAN'T AFFORD ONE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Porsche is good. We'll know that, but why don't we buy Porsche? BECAUSE WE CAN'T AFFORD THE DOWN PAYMENT AT ALL.

A million dollar mansion on Sunset Boulevard is great. The only problem is that WE CAN'T EVEN AFFORD TO PAY REAL ESTATE TAX FOR THAT HOUSE.

Especially not in this bear market.

                              edit:

                              Forgot about weight issue.
Suppose that you're in ROTC and have the money. You should know what's the feeling of carrying an M249 on a 20 mile march. Everybody bitches after doing just that. Not to mention when it becomes part of your luggage weight in the airport.

Insulting people is no way to make an argument.

The guy wants to buy a laptop for college and he is a gamer. He clearly stated he thought it would be more efficient to combine his gaming needs and college needs into a laptop, instead of getting a laptop and upgrading his desktop. My advice was to get a laptop good for taking notes and sitting on a desk in a classroom, etc, and then spend the rest of the money to get a PC to sit in his dorm/apartment which would cost less than your gaming laptop, but outperform it. Should he really spend more money to get a gaming laptop that compares to my mid-range PC from 8 months ago? If he's extremely rich, well then fine, but, if he's like a lot of people on this forum, I think it would be actually more cost efficient to buy a smaller lappy and a regular gaming rig.

That's my opinion, and its a valid one. The OP can take it or leave it, and that's his choice. I just thought I would show that another alternative is possible where he thought there wasn't one. He, not you, can decide whether I'm right wrong. :)
