The 4870 sits between the GTX260 and GTX280. Goes like this

GTX260 > 4850 > GTX260 (216SP) > 4870 > GTX280 > 4870X2

Wonder where the 4850x2 will fit in :)

A 4850x2 will be better than a 4870. ATI have done a good job of getting internal Crossfire to work and this shows through the phenomenal performance of the 4870x2.

Theres a review up on hexus, they said it was good but for only £30 less than the 4870x2 you mights aswell buy a 4870x2

1680x1050 or upwards. A lot of people play on 1920x1080 (such as myself!).

A 4850x2 will be better than a 4870. ATI have done a good job of getting internal Crossfire to work and this shows through the phenomenal performance of the 4870x2.

1680x1024? How much bigger of a resolution u wonna go/can go for that matter?!? You gotta have a really high end screen for more res than that to just take advantage of the ati cards? Thats a bit much me thinks but owellls..

Would the link to the vision card be a 4850x2 cuz its dual bios/fan or something? I'd imagine it would be better than a 4870 myself unless it follows the same lines as cpu management..

Not necessarily. The GTX260 outperforms the 4850 at Crysis and some games, but the Radeon 4850 takes the lead when anti aliasing is applied and at high resolutions.

If you are playing <1680x1050, then yes, the GTX260 is better. But, above that, i'd say the 4850 is better. The 4850 was cheaper as well.

Those are for the 4870... the 4850 will get beaten by the GTX260, but costs £60 more.

i would say performancewise they are inbetween the 260 and 280 but closer the 260. The ATI varient does beat out the 280 in some benchmarks (such as COD or GRID) but the nvidia cards own it in crysis.

The 2GB varient you saw was the 4870x2 - internally crossfired GPU and its the fastest card on the market today :)

yeah VGA doesnt have the bandwidth to handle resolutions above 1280 x 768 for LCD and plasma really. If it was a CRT you might get away with it but im drifting into another discussion here :)

As for the price, its your call but i personally would only feel comfortable be selling it for 10-15% less than its modern equivalent.

Yea I know what you mean but this mobo I have wasn't no half a$$ one nor was the soundcard with the extra features, I'd imagine the mobo is still a good 150-200 range as the LGA775 socket type is still going to be a strong product with the C2D's out not to mention this board has 3 PCIE slots and rated safe @ 1333FSB and I have gone to 1500 or more with it already on a E6600 (made it like 3.4 or 3.6ghz I can't remember).

My point is I purposely paid extra for this board when I built my pc cuz I wanted a future proof system and it really still is thus why I'd believe its worth at least 1200.

And since you are from the UK, the price is already "decreased" 14% in you're terms because 1200 is without tax and Ontaria tax is 14%. So in the end I believe it all works out.

Lastly he is not a computer pro, he does not know how to build a computer at all and in the end he would still save $$ even if I sold it for 1300 or more because its a good gaming rig with potential still.

I guess one would argue why sell it then? Yea it maybe stupid to sell but the more I think about it the better it sounds, sell now and rebuild in a few months with an i7 cpu why not?

Well its all speculation for now neways, I still have to talk to him about price for it. Thanks for thoughts guys, much appreciated.

with this talk about the ati 4870 being a first choice pick, I was looking around to see why you guys were suggesting it and my guess is that it is because of the stream processors on it? 800 vs 240 and as well the GDDR5 ram vs GDDR3/4 used by nvidia (actually do they even use 4 yet?).

With that said, where would this card clock in @ on a performance list?

i know that, i mean you can get Avid on both which is what a lot of proffessional post production houses tend to prefer... going off topic slightly here though :/

well not really, avid is pretty much the same thing and has been around a lot longer - you can get that on both op sys' i think.

Might be a good idea however it hink your asking price might be a touch high and it would be a bit unfair/unreasonable to expect that knd of money. I might be wrong i dont know exchange rates all that well.

True enough but he isn't newhere near as informed about compys and considering that the mobo price isn't even in that equation and the wrong sound card is in it (The one I have in it is more expensive but same hardware, just comes with front panel for extra features and remot), I'm thinking I can get away with a decent amount from him. And honestly it isn't a bad system at all, its very awesome. I have no issues myself with it other than the fact that I know its on a dieing tech path kinda like AGP vs pcie and I'd like to hop off that while there is still value in it. Besides, I tried to help him out months ago when he was looking for a computer and he goes to futureshop, more like scamshop and buys a piece of **** computer for extreme $$..

If you have a DVI port on your laptop then you should able to run a DVI-HDMI cable to your TV, if your surround sound gear has pro-logic you should be able to get some kind of surround off it but because i think the signal leading to the amp will be stereo i think it will be processed surround

Mmm now that mention it there is a 2.1 speaker switch on the sub and I guess itll let me use just the one wire then to plug in my lappy. The only **** thing bout my lappy is the speakers, I swear I blew them up alrdy or the one side neways. I also thinking about getting a 7.1 surround sound card via USB.

And my lappy has a vga port that can be linked to the rgb port on my tv i think but i remember doing this with my 21" widescreen and the screen was somewhat fuzzy and blurry then again it is capable of greater resolution than the tv...
