    Considering selling and making new

Well my buddy wants my rig and I'm thinking it maybe a good choice on my behalf to sell my 1year old beast to him.

    Basically, the setup is:

cpu e6600 - I don't think its worth this much nemore though??
ncix.com is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, ncix.com has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

sound card creative 7.1 xtremegamer f1delity or w/e (also came with controller and front panel for music instrument input, this link is the closest match as to what I have) - does ne1 know what the $$ tag maybe for the extras on the one I have?

cpu cooling fan zalman 9700 - Woah has this gone up in price or something? Maybe I'll just give him the stock cooling that came with the cpu.

ram 4 x 1gb sticks, ocz ddr2 1066mhz - the most dissappointing part of this build (bought it when it was godly and ddr3 comes out a month later and slashes ddr2 prices down instantly)

    Summary

So I have to do the math after to check what this rings out at but that'll basically be my budget for the next build as well as willingness to go a bit further.

    -edit- math done

None of these sums include a price on the motherboard though, and the tax is just there for me to see - obviously I can't charge him tax LOl

So grand total is $1,381 before tax and rebate including zalman fan and $1,300 without zalman

    tax 1.14 = $1,574 or $1,482

    - $90 rebates (total)

    = $1291 or $1210 before taxes and with $1484 or $1392

So with that said and done, don't forget I'm still needing a price on the mobo too - but does the grand total price with rebates no tax seem fair to sell @ to you guys? I'd be hooking him up with office 03 too cuz I'm cool like that.

    Next Build...

So before I start looking at new parts for a computer, I have a few quick questions first/interests in my next rig

    a) It's easy to make a dual booting system right? Vista 64 bit and XP Pro 32 bit - I just patrition the HD and select which OS to run on boot up right? I know someone who does this with his computer and I meant to try ubuntu on this machine but never got around to it...

    b) With Vista 64bit mentioned above, obviously my next q should I stick with 2gb ram or get 4gb? I plan to buy a HD cam corder soon in the upcoming weeks so video editing is prolly gonna be a everyday thing for me.

    c) Last time I was paying attention to vid cards was when 8800 was king - so my question now is what is the best DX10 card and what is the best $$ to performance ratio vid card to get? (like E6600 when it came out).

    d) I'll prolly be using a quad c2d 45nm, the cheaper one and just oc it with a zalman 9700 for now.

    e) My main screen rite now is a sony bravia 46" 1080i screen or reverting to my smaller samsung 21" widescreen 1680x1080 or w/e it was..

    f) This case looks so cool and truly unique and not to mention air flow must be surpreme, should I get it or stick with the 900?

    g) Should I get a DDR2 board or DDR3? Or isn't there mobos that support both? Would that not make them limited on how much they can take of certain ram? AKA max 4GB ddr3 or ddr2 vs other mobos @ 8gb??

    h) What mobo should I go with? I liked the 680i EVGA though I never went Sli with it.. I prolly will never buy a second vid card let alone a third anyways for that matter. I am very old skool, I only hate every new game that comes out. Oyeah, I pretty much only play bf2 and cod4 now but I like to keep the door open incase I pick up a new game and like it actually. Crysis campaign seemed cool but I left for Bermuda and haven't touched it since I came home now.

    i) Water or fan cooling? lol... prolly fan but has water cooling dropped at all?

Yea yea I know its long but these are all the questions buzzing through my head about selling my current computer and building a new one. I'm really pro on selling my current because I feel I can save more money by doing so in the long run not to mention I hear the 260/280 cards are less power hungry than the 8800 @ idle - would this be true vs certain games too perhaps? I don't really like that the 8800 is a racker upper on the electric bill.

uhhh lol thanks for you're time and effort in advance - of course I'll still be doing research on me own but having opinions from people up to speed on this stuff helps a tonne.

If you're gonna links me with a new build right off the bat, just gonna say I'm prolly gonna stick to Canadacomputers.com cuz its local and usually kills newegg/ncix anyways in prices.

Re: Considering selling and making new

      a) Its possible and i would deffo recommend ubuntu, i love it so much more than windows. It isnt as easy as it is to dual boot with two windows partitions, if you look on the ubuntu forums or even just google 'guide dual boot ubuntu windows' there will be tonnes of walk throughs

      b) 4GB with vista is genrally regarded as worthwhile, yet not completely necissary. I would splash out and get it though.

      c) ATI 4870 is regarded as the best gaming GPU at the moment and the 4850 is about the best bang for buck however for those who use the Adobe creative suite 4, Nvidia cards such as the GTX260 have optomisations for it (so i will probs be getting one after the die shrink)

      d) There are better alternatives to zalman coolers but yeah

      e) ok... :)

      f) it is a cool case but doesnt offer a lot of protection for your componants, i think its more designed for testbed builders. I would stick with the case you have or if yu are bored with it lok for something else more conventional like a coolermaster RC690

      g) No point in DDR3 with C2 as there isnt enough bandwidth available between the chip and the ram to take benefit of the extra available speed. The new core i7 systems which will be out soon should take advantage of it a lot better but they are going to be expensive systems.

      h) nope still expensive and always will be :) air cooling is far less hassle too, watercooling is great for those serious hardcore overclockers/modders but for most its a bit of a waste of time.

tbh i dont think i wud bother selling up the PC right now, i would just upgrade your graphics and CPU to a 4870 and a Q6600/Q9300 BUT if you where to sell it i would say wait a month or two so you can at least contemplate core i7 as an option.

Well I'm guessing you agree on the sell then? lol.

it'll prolly be 1300-1500 or so I'm not sure.

        --------------------------------------------------------

Hmmm Yeah I meant to ask if someone thinks I should or should not sell this current rig.

The cons I have with it include:

        - not pcie 2.0

        - power hungry

To be honest, i think you should keep your rig and upgrade the CPU to a Q6600 or a 45nm E8xxx chip.

It'll be good until mainstream Core i7.

Well with that said is it even worth doing that then?

And would my mobo be able to take a 45nm cpu? I guess cuz they both the same socket but I always figured theyd be like too small and wiggle around lol.

45nm just means the transistors are smaller, the actual CPU is the same size since they are both LGA775.

But, yes, a CPU upgrade would be good. The Q6600 is better for multitasking whereas the new E8xxx 45nm chips will run faster and overclock a lot, lot further.

If you did move to a 45nm then you may want to make sure your bios is up to date first

Re: Considering selling and making new

Yup, but it will support it fine. The only change is that the FSB will be 333mhz (1333mhz) instead of 266mhz (1066mhz).

I think my fsb is already set at 1450 neways so its not really a problem.

What about vid cards? Am I stuck now cuz I have oldskool pcie mobo and not 2.0? Is there ne card that is as good or better than my current thatll be more friendly?

I'll look @ the cpus in a second.

PCI-E 2 cards work fine on PCI-E 1 at the moment.

4850 and above will be be better than your card

9800GTX and above will be better than your card

ATIs are commonly regarded as the best gaming cards atm

To be honest, i'd hang onto your GTX.

You won't see a massive improvement unless you bought a Radeon 4870 or something.

zzz and all I really play is bf2 and cod4 so its not like i need performance improvements.. just thinking maybe its over kill and need something smaller. my rents always hounded @ me that im eating there power bill with this computer lol.

Woah those core i7's look pretty cool. just read up on them, using amd idea too eh? I wonder what amd is going to do about that, I thought that was the only thing they had over intel and now they lost that. Heeeey whats the story on amd neways? they jus gonna die out now or they got something in the making yet to combat intel?

And woah, times have changed lol. I remember ATI > nvidia back in the day with 64/128mb cards - I myself hated nvidia cuz that shlt burnt out. and then nvidia was trashing ATI with its 8800 series and now ati is back in the lead? coool!

Yaaa the G80 core is a huge radiator with Vram chips installed!
AMD have a new range of 45nm opteron CPUs coming out fairly soon and im kind of interested to see how they will do, i dont trust any of these pre release benchmarks but if they are anything to go by then they are looking good. I dont really think AMD is going for the high end market at the moment they are more trying to catch out the low to mid range markets with competetive pricing. they are good for HTPCs though :)

                              uuhhhh choices choices...

                              Q6600 -8mb cache 1066 fsb 65nm 2.4ghz
                              E8500 -6mb cache 1333 fsb 45nm 3.16ghz
                              Q9300 -6mb cache 1333 fsb 45nm 2.5ghz
                              Q9550 -12mb cache 1333 fsb 45nm 2.83ghz

ghz isn't really important to me cuz I'll just over clock that shlt out neways and what it really comes down to is two areas:

                              Dual core or Quad?
                              6mb cache vs 12mb?

I'd say go with the 45nm ones myself but is the cache that huge in terms of improvement?

Either way since i7 core is out in like a week, I'll be sitting tight and watching prices drop first - another reason to maybe sell my current rig now lol? I use my laptop more than it neways lol..
