Generic thermal paste vs. AS5/OCZ Freeze

Is there a noticeable difference? Between the pre-applied thermal paste on some heatsinks or the brand name 'good' thermal pastes/

I'm not running OCed right now, so I doubt it would on my rig.

Depends which pre applied cooler it comes with...

My Arctic Freezer Extreme had pre applied MX2...But i still chose to use AS5...

So it depends on what comes on the heatsink..

in a word, yeah. the higher end stuff will contain pound-for-pound more conductive solids (silver/ceramics). you might see a difference of a handful of degrees C, nothing to write home about...and you really wouldn't know if that was due to breakdown of your current or because you put some high-quality stuff on there (the answer is probably both).

also, i've noticed that the preapplied stuff is, well, to thick for my tastes.

if you do decide to replace your thermal paste, you can get some AS5 rebranded under the thermal take brand from radio shack, if its in stock, for about $10. store the unused portion upright and in your fridge if you intend on reusing it, else the solids will separate away from the business end of the tube.

I can get AS5 at my local Fry's for $7 for a 3.5g tube. :)

Also never heard about keeping unused paste in the fridge, that's interesting.

properties of any colloidal solution: the warmer it is, the faster the suspension tends to separate. keeping the tube upright will keep the solids that do precipitate towards the end of the tube; keeping it in fridge will delay the separation of the suspension.

think of it as mayo. if you left it out in the sun, it would turn into oil on top and semi-solid egg...moosh on bottom. same principle, only slower with AS5, etc.

Do they say that anywhere on the packaging? i had no idea! means my tube is pretty nackered, is there anything i can do to sort it out?

fyi i cleaned my eah4870 from the stock thermal and put arctic silver 5
now it runs at 45, 46 c on desktop with the stock cooler around 20 or less speed...(which is pretty quiet just like the when the cpu spools up from time to time to cool down..not loud at all..)


now with crysis this thing is noticeable ..but i run it super high all of it as far as it can go...
with battlefield 2142 the fan never even spools up..the card does not get hot with the settings maxed..same for cod4 ..

im not real happy about it, i think this card is just a fregin heater but it will take on anything u throw at it ....
