This is a pretty fascinating read. Now when I"m done changing the oil in my car, if I have any left over I'll just squeeze it into my computer case.

Engine oil has higher viscosity than water. They are ideal for this purpose because it's relative good flow and low vapor pressure. Unless you want a immersed system, water-based coolant is better.

I actually use diluted Listerine.

Yeah, it's a sweet set up, especially with 3 GPU's. But what a pain it will be when a part breaks down. You have to go through them to get any part because they need to "dress" it for the oil bath.

I love the back up battery idea, but did you see the process of removing the system from the case? you'll need a garage and some old sheets to put that thing on. And like a car I'm sure after 3,000 hours of gaming, it will need a fresh tub of oil.

Pretty cool concept, but it's a waste of time. Think about how long it would take to:

1. Dry off the components.
2. Change the oil in there.
3. Clean it once in a while.

Not only that, but how would you RMA something broken after being soaked in oil? I mean, you would literally have to wait a whole day for it to dry off before you can send it in.

Also wanted to know... how would this work if it was really cold in the room, say during winter time? Wouldn't the oil be thick until it warmed up and therefore cause it to not cool efficiently?

I don't think you would have to change the oil very often or clean the components, since they are complete submerged in oil after all.


I suppose you could put some anti-freeze in the case when its really cold.

They claim it's upgradable, but I'm fairly sure total submersion (And the requisite removal of HSFs etc.) would viod pretty much any warranty going.

You have to read the whole thing. The company producing the computer cases provides all parts. They have a process to "prep" it for being submerged in oil. Therefore, I'm sure there will be a warrenty of some kind through them.

One of my big concerns is, we will have to buy only products they intend to sell. Not like being able to go to newegg.com and pick a new GPU, it has to be something they provide.

Yes; I doubt the prepped kit will be at bargain basement prices... :P

TBH though, this system is going to be an absolute pain in most situations. After all, the oil alone is likely to weigh about 60KG (from a quick back of envelope calculation...), so it'll be nightmare to move around.

Oh I agree, it is a cool concept. But it stops at concept.

The fact that you would submerge the computer in oil will be a messy situation. You'll need to treat it like a car when changing the oil (do it in a garage).

This computer makes as much sense as buying an Alienware computer, cool looking but way overpriced.
