I don't think you can get Q6600 running higher than 3.6GHz on water, unless it's a suicide run. If you want to run 4GHz on the daily basis, it's better to get Q9550 or some of the QX9xxxx.

I'd doubt Core i7 will drop price before Sandybridge (32nm Nehalem) comes out. Those Core 2 Quad QX6xxx and QX9xxx are always expensive. Even if AMD Phenom II pulls out great in benchs, Intel will still sell them at that price. People who get it now do not need to upgrade in the next 3 years, just like people who bought Q6600 in 2007.

However, Alex, your Q6600 is fairly new, so I'd say to go with water cooling. There's not much point to get a Nehalem rig unless you want to run 280 in triple SLi now.

I've decided I will probably buy an i7 and new mobo around April-June.

Then before school starts, depending on how much money I have. I'll upgrade RAM and a new video card too. Hopefully that will keep me satisfied through my undergraduate years.

Yeah, i said that assuming i can do 4ghz underwater. If i can do 3.6ghz on air, i suspect it should be fine.

As an overclocker, i would probably not take the first CPU's as they are always the first revision with dodgy IHS's and high VID's. That's why the first Q6600 takers have crap overclocking chips.

Most people have ones with a 1.325v VID. That is pure horrible.

i wont be buying till january(ish) and im not a massive overclocker il only be pushing for about 3.2ish really which isnt too high

The main advantages with i7 for me is the memory bandwidth as it helps with video rendering, converting filetypes etc etc.

Obviously when it comes to the time if people have had a lot of trouble with them then i will just get a cheap C2Q and save my cash for the 32nm revision.

Re: Who is planning to get Core i7 and X58?

I'll get it if I sell my current rig first.

Don't really care though, Initial reviews seem awesome and all but this hasn't opened any new doors for me yet other then my interest of doing video editing soon, but I have to give my current rig a chance to do that before I start buying new hardware again.

intel is going bezerk with new cpus neways right now.. I already fell for this game once and I lost out on certian things that makes me more cautious in buying a new toy simply for e-penis show n tell.

In the end I rather use the money for a new sound system in my escape or put it towards something else that I'll actually be able to enjoy with my friends in person, not online.

alex get core i7..in fact im thinking of ebaying my system for it..it makes such a huge difference from what i seen..
myself with 3.7 ghz and everything the same as u i cant max gtai4 or crysis really for that matter..
i seen with my own eyes core i7 and 8800gts sli run 60 fps both those games easily..
it runs like water no choppiness no staggering to catch up nothing its smooth..

I'm getting core i7 in about a month or less depends on the wife..
as a choice for water cooling or core i7 i think id get core i7 from what i see..that's my choice anyway..
core i7 has been out some time now..its not cheep still..
but the conclusion is its 8 core not 4 and that seems to be making a huge difference over quad..correction i see u got water cooling so now all u gota do is get core i7 L:OL

Do not want i7, way too expensive. I am waiting out for mainstream i5 systems that should be less expensive and potentially more overclockable as they are a later revision.

^ ditto. the only value (in general) of buying the first of anything in the tech world is just to say you had it first, at twice the price of better stuff a few months down the road.

a few remarkable exceptions might have been the 8800gts, the early C2D's, some fast ddr2 ram, all of which are still very "modern" by today's standards.

the i5 platform is also supposed to have integrated PCI-E controller so for gamers, people who liek to use multiple GPU systems and anyone using software with GPU acceleration; they may result in better overall performance.

Im also glad i saved my cash and just did a mini upgrade to keep me going until they revised it :)
