Im pretty sure you could fit a Q6600 and a HD4850 into the budget. All depends if he wishes to overclock as if he has no desire to then maybe a cheaper motherboard (G31, P31 etc) they aren't fantastic motherboards but they are perfectly functional. If he wants to overclock then yeah the 45nm Dual is probs the better way too go.

If he uses his existing windows license then he can definitely go all out.

I mentioned this case up in my first reply. What do you mean by drilling? link?

He probably means drilling holes to run wires behind the tray. Not sure if a drill would be the best way to go about that, though.

Yup. But, since there is no window on the Antec 300, it isn't that necessary.

I quite like to have all my cables tucked away/taped down regardless to be honest. I guess its anal more than anything else but i like opening the side of the case to clean, add new parts, replace broken parts etc and see a nice open spacious tidy case. Although its not nearly as much of an issue with SATA technology, it does also help with the airflow.

So yeah im intreged about this drill thing...?

Could have tidied up the post to make it a little easier for us to see but anyway... out of those i wud go with the second one but why AMD might i ask? intel C2 are much stronger chips at the moment. I assume that u dont need a new windows license seeing as u havent included it in the above posts.

Here is an example of what i would do with $650 in your shoes

Bear in mind that still has 4GB of ram and a much better GFX card than the ones you suggested, aswell as having a C2D processor :)

if you right click on the image and save it to your desktop the you should be able to zoom in on it using the image preview software tha tcomes with windows.

Right click it - save image as

Intel's chips greatly outperform AMD's at the moment. However, Phenoms are still nice if you're not after pure performance.

Re: Need help making new pc

Current generation of Phenom is not any different from Barcelona core Opterons. They are essentially the same thing with different packaging. While 4x Opteron (16 cores) are very good for virtualization servers and high performance computing architecture (IBM Roadrunner), they are not of much use for desktops. Most desktop software were written to utilize limited paging size and are quite predictable in nature. Phenom's limited and slow L3 cache becomes hindrance to performance in this case, though you probably won't feel a thing most of the time.

Granted, if a program is well written to utilize only 512kB cache for each thread, then the true power of Phenom will be revealed. Intel Core 2 will take a hit once data and thread size are much larger (at least 4 times) than L2. That's why people in IT business say that AMD "scales better," because it does. Nonetheless, not one commercial software had done that. Intel had learned this the hard lesson that nobody will rewrite millions of code just to run their programs faster on Itanium. AMD, on the other hand, took different approach in favor of server market. Their "reputation" was mostly hurt by the TLB error, core 02 defect and the hype they failed to deliver in late 2007.

Most Phenom overclockers notice significant performance gain once they get northbridge overclocked over certain level (which is not much). The limited and slow L3 really kills Phenom's performance in terms of raw performance.

Though my 9850 will arrive today, I can't recommend others to use current generation Phenom. 45nm Deneb may be, if they are cheap, under $235 and perform within 90% of Yorkfields at comparable frequency.
