Wow, you've had that since October and it was that nasty? I've cleaned just about everything in my computer except under that cover on my 8800GTS 640 that I got in February... last year. I'm curious now how much cat fur is in there, as my temps just shot up to 65 idle and 80 on full load. They used to be 40 idle and 65 full load with the fan on high. I just figured it was the summer heat and ambient temps, but maybe it's time to dismantle some stuffs.

Alex, I noticed your new 8800GT SC looks a lot like my 8800GT XXX. Wanted to ask, did you ever take that card apart? I'm asking because I'm having trouble with mine. I can't remove the shroud cover for it simply because of the location of the screws.

I'll have a look tomorrow. I'm going to try and BIOS Vmod it first.

Alright. The reason I can't take mine off is because it has little black screws on both sides of the shroud. I can unscrew all 4 on one side, but the other side has like a plastic bar screwed on that says XFX which blocks the 4 screws on that side. The black bar has 2 screws, but I can only take one out because the other one is blocked by the shroud.

Not sure if yours is the same as mine since it's EVGA. I'll show you some pictures tomorrow of it. To me, it seems the only way I can take it off is unscrewing all the heatsink screws from under the card and take off the heatsink. Then unscrew the shroud from the heatsink.

Hmm i have never been able to unscrew my GPU heatsink.... compressed air seems to do the job for now.

You wish. Well I have a new GPU in there anyhow, turns out the springy pin things were just clogged up with dust (pliers did the job)

I'm going to be opening up my PC to do this to my CPU and GPU at some point next week is there anything else that is really necessary for doing this to a CPU?

                    Cheers.

Make sure you have something good to remove the thermal paste. That means pure alcohol or something like Arcticlean.
