Buy a HD 3650, it's even cheaper for the same performance.

How about, No 8600 - any version.

There are much better alternatives, such as the previously stated Radeon HD 3650

Or save up to a 9600GT. Don't know about the 8800GS, but I'd rather have that than the 8600s.

Neither, and don't waste your money.
If you don't have enough money, don't buy a new card. Don't just throw away for the sake of buying something.
I waited forever until I had enough money to buy good parts. I didn't just buy cheap s**t because that's all I could afford. It is the lamest excuse I've ever heard.

ANYWAY, if you want to save money over performance, get a 9600GT. Either that or go home. (unless you want to spend more).

edit: don't think I'm some stuck up rich guy who can afford the best either. All I'm suggesting is that you don't throw you're money away on older technology.

Man.. I feel like I'm turning into the Vika of the Tech Center.

I'm like u i don't buy crap quality just because its cheap, I don't make a lot of money either
but buying cheap is just like throwing your money away. so i rather collect money for a longer time and get a good product or don't buy it at all. Anyway buying cheap actuality costs you more because you will have to upgrade that card in 3 months again anyway. So if you want to spend 100 every 3 months on upgrades, rather then paying 250 and have a card that will run well for a year then, I'm not stopping you just do the math. If I were to buy a card now I would get the HD3870 or the HD3870 X2.

                      Delayed gratification ftw.

                      Instant gratification ftl.

(oh and if you really want to save up, I think the 8800GT or maybe ()the 3870 are you're best bets)

sorry for not clarifying - i have the money, i just dont want to or need to spend that much. the only games i play are battlefield 2 / 2142, css, tf2, and i want to hopefully be able to play "just cause"... so trust me im not trying to be stubborn, if i wanted to play crysis or lost planet or any other new gen game i would get the 8800gt in an instant.

my question is... should i get the 3650 or 8600gt xxx? both are 256mb gddr3

I'm not saying its bad to get a overall lower end video card, its just that the price to performance ratio is definitely bad.

Getting a 9600GT would shell out a little more cash and get a lot more performance.

I think most people will agree with me: the 8600 isn't worth the money it costs now. :)

edit: if you wait for a good deal you can get a 9600GT for a little over $100.

Also, even if you decide to keep it cheaper, don't get a 256Mb model. That's just not enough these days. 512 is necessary. (i.e. go with the HD 3650 then)

of course! i understand what youre saying. but im doing a completely new build near black friday this year so i only need something to tide me over till then.. my gift certificate has a little over $100 left over on it and i would really like to purchase something off of newegg solely with that. which card would you recommend if you step back and consider my situation?

9600 GT! It doesn't quite match up with the 8800GT and is a whole lot cheaper still.
