    Weird Noise

So I've been getting a weird whining noise coming from my computer, I think it started today. The noise starts when I turn on the PC and have it on for like 10 minutes and then usually stops, but I want to find out what's causing it. I'm taking a guess and thinking it might be coming from the hard drive or one of the fans, but I'm not sure. It's not really loud, but you can hear it without trying.

Not only that, but before I left for work I set my PC to "hibernate" which usually turns it off and then restores what you were doing when you turn it on. I never wait to make sure it turns off because it usually does, but when I got home from work the computer was on. So I turned on the monitor and moved the mouse to see what was running, but my screen said there is no video signal and I'm thinking to myself "wtf?" because the PC was on.

Well, after it wouldn't get a signal I pressed the reset button. It didn't load up, it said "please reboot and select a device to boot from" and I was once again thinking "wtf?" because I know my hard drive works and is connected. I turned the PC off after that and turned it back on - everything was fine.

I ran a defragger before all of this, could this maybe caused the problem? Any information is welcome, thanks.

Is it dusty inside the case? If so, get rid of that dust!

get down and listen real close to where the noise is coming from...if its a high pitched noise from the HDD then its most likely on the fail line and time to back up your data. Otherwise could be bearings in a fan...there are only a few moving parts normally in a computer that could make noise and thats the fans and HDD.

Hmmm... well I started backing up everything like a week ago since I'm planning on purchasing a new 500GB HDD, so I could care less if it's the HDD. The thing is though, the HDD is only about 5-6 months old.

It could be the fans or dust. But, my case is really clean inside last time I checked which was like a week ago. I'll probably be getting the HDD soon so I guess I'll check out the fans and dust when I do that. I might also just purchase 3 new fans that have a lot more CFM than my current ones.

Those little fans on some motherboard chipsets are buggers for making noises, not so easy getting decent replacements either.

HDDs as a rule of thumb for me anyways make a high pitching whirling noise on their way out, hope it's just a bearing in one of your case fans on the way out!

The best fix for that is to avoid them and get a motherboard with passive cooling or the heat pipe.. takes the fan out of the puzzle.

Yah... I wish I had as much computer knowledge as I have now like 6 months ago. Could've bought much better parts for my build for a cheaper price by purchasing them on Newegg instead of Tigerdirect... not to mention I'd get better performance by choosing an Intel over the AMD setup I have.

But have you checked for dust yet?
I want to solve your problem, not speculate.

Well it hasn't been making the noise anymore for the past two days. I'll check tonight for dust though.

Weird. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, to be honest.
