Hm, Looky looky here Folks. I was playing Skate on my ps3, and noticed that it was lagging like Sh*t online. So, I look on my network tab for the first time, and I caught my damn neighbor leaching off our Internet! This is how I found it,

(I blurred his computers name out). Anyways, we have a wireless router and I know we should have put a lock on it earlier, shame on me, I know. I'm not sure on model at the moment, but it's a linksys.... (lol?) what would be the easiest way be to go about locking the router and making it password protected?

Go to his house and cut all his computer cables, it'll solve your problem =P.

If you still have the original instruction booklet for the router you can try looking there, usually they will let you know how to do it. If not, then you can visit the official Linksys website and should be able to find it on there. If you can't find it there, just email them or give them a call and they should be able to fix it for you.

Simple login to the router at 192.168.0.1 or whatever your gateway is when you open the command prompt and type in ipconfig/all.

Once your in get a pen and paper ready to write down the wireless key information.
Go to wireless security, then you should see something that says wireless encryption.
Set it to at least WPA2, don't use WEP as it's weak and easily crackable. The others might be hard for you to setup properly.

Once you set it to WPA2 right down the new wireless key carefully. Then search for MAC Address filter and add your MAC Address to it which can be found using ipconfig or type in GetMAC and copy all of the MAC Address you get which are like 00-11-22-etc....

Now take the MAC Addresses and add them to the MAC Address filter then save it then go back and turn it back on.

Only add the MAC Address that match with the ips that you got with ip config.

Simply add a WPA key so that you have to enter a password which is then encrypted. Otherwise go around and teach him a lesson.

With Linksys the opitons should be under the Wireless>Wireless Security Tab, I have a neighbour that decided to keep his network open, a little silly these days where most houses prefer wireless networks as they seem a little less hassle. But you can get a lot of information from an open router/network, including there DSL/ISP username and password, which could then gives you access to their primary email account which would then have a wealth of information such as bank details, seperate account details, etc. SO (if I was you) CHANGE YOUR ISP PASSWORD ALSO.

Urgh, Ok it's the Wrt54g vers 1.1.

I went to the address but when it asks for a password I put in the default "admin" but it doesn't let me in. I guess someone has changed the password, like my dad? It's a 5 year old router so linksys said I had to pay 32 bucks to "renew my support", which I refuse to do. So, any ideas how to reset the password? Otherwise, I'm screwed.

Ask him nicely to **** off and die before you make him **** off and die...But seriously..Why dont you just tell your parents or just go over yourself and tell him its not very nice..Or you could go to the cops and taddle.....Im sure leaching someones connection is illegal

There has already been disputes between our family's about landlines, property, etc. I would rather just cut them off by making it WPA.

Digital Tresspassing is a crime?

On the back of the router there should be a pin hole labelled Reset or something similar, get a needle or paper clip stick it in there for 10 seconds, this will reset the device, resetting the router admin details. THIS WILL ALSO RESET THE ROUTER SETUP (this means your connection/ISP/wireless setup information) unless you have a backup that you can just re-apply.

The default admin account for a WRT54g has no login name with the password of 'admin'.

Also try asking your dad if he knows the password if you think it was him that changed it.

That's what I was worried about. How much configuring will I need to do when I reset the router? I don't think my dad will remember the password, so that's probably the only solution.

That depends on your ISP and type of connection
I have a static IP and needs to fill in:
IP Address
Subnet Mask
ISP Gateway Address
Primary and secondary DNS

And then you will need to set up the WLAN of course.


ETA someone stupid enough to trespass on a WLAN with a computer bearing his own name probably doesn't have the best security in the world.
A few weeks logging of his websurfing habits could be interesting

I have a comcast, cable connection. Any ideas on the difficulty? I don't really want to reset it and be screwed, but it's my only option. Tracing his websurfing sounds like fun :thumbsup:
