Minimum PSU I would need

So I've found a really cheap 8800GS that fits my budget which I might get, but I need to find a PSU. What would be the minimum wattage for my computer (but replace the 8600GT with 8800GS)? 400? 450?

Right now I'm using a 300W that came with my computer (inspiron 531) and I've had no problems with it.

Both seem pretty cheap. I would get an antec, thermaltake, or some named brand one. But 550 is more than enough. I use a 500 one with my 8800 GTS.

Those are both crap brands.GEt something respectable.I myself have the antec earthwatts 500.Specs in my system.

Aren't dell cases different than the standard ATX case? I dunno if that presents a problem for the PSU though.

Anyway, you definitely should get a 500+ watt PSU. The difference between those two is quality. With a cheapo one you run the risk of it not lasting long and potentially damaging other components. Also the cheap one probably doesn't have the right connectors for your PC either.

As it is, the rosewill one isn't that good either... I personally have a corsair 520HX much better.

I was told that if I were to replace the PSU in my dell, it would have to be ATX. I'm not too familiar with PSUs, but do corsair, thermaltake, antec, etc make ATX?

The first one has more Amps on the 12V rail which you will need, but the second one has two 12V rails if you decided to go SLI.

A 500-550W PSU would be more than enough for one 8800GS, but make sure you get a good name brand and one that has good amps on the 12V rail.

Oh. I thought Dells needed BTX, but that's good if ATX works.

Anyway, 99% of PSU's are ATX, so no worries there.

On newegg they have different categories like "ATX" and "ATX12V". Would either one work?

What kind of dell do you have? I don't believe you have to get a certain brand, because I got a Thermaltake, and all I had to do was cut the metal to where it didn't hit the power switch.

had a wee look at som pics in goolge of it. its defo an ATX and there is no metal expect at the side for the screws so any ATX psu will fit.

get a 500w+, make sure it has the right connections and your sorted.

cheeper ones will just die quicker or play up sooner so i would go for a mid range one if your on a budget

Google around "Dell PSU replacing" or something like that. I seem to recall that some Dell mobos(possibly older models) were not compatible with a regular PSU cord pinnings. So do some research beforehand.
