dual channel memory

i am a noob at memory. but i have 3 gig of gskill memory and my bios says it is only single channel. how do i get it to switch to dual channel?

if it's 3x1gb sticks then I don't think it can be dual channel. you can have 2gb of it in dual channel,though. you'd need 2x1gb and 2x512 for dual channel (which is what I have)

You can't. To able to run the memory in Dual channel the amount of sticks need to be even number and they to be of same specifications (size, timings etc).

Your problem is in mem size disparity, one 1GB stick and one 2GB stick.

Don't worry. You are not losing too much, maybe 3-5% of total performance and it's definately better to have enough memory than to lack it.

Yes if you ditch the 1GB stick and go only with 2x2GB.

you have to manually put the memory sticks in the right slots for dual channel to work, but after that it does it automatically. you don't have to go into bios to activate anything

Actually it will be fine if you run it as 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 or 1 + 2 +1 +2, as long as they alternate, and matched channels have equal sized RAM, it doesn't matter.

it depends on the motherboard. On my motherboard, the slots are colour coded. Slots 1 and 2 are purple and 3 and 4 are green. 1 and 2 are in dual channel and so are 3 and 4. so this is my setup, which is in dual-channel according to cpu-z:

(purple) slot 1: 1gb
(purple) slot 2: 1gb
(green) slot 3: 512mb
(green) slot 4: 512mb

when I set it up like this cpu-z said it was in single channel:
(purple) slot 1: 1gb
(purple) slot 2: 512mb
(green) slot 3: 1gb
(green) slot 4: 512mb

if you only have 2 slots, then you don't have to worry about which slots to put them in

I have 6 slots 4 for ddr2 and 2 for ddr3

^^ lucky! means i have to buy a new board once DDR2 dies, hopefully it i will take long XD
