Quad Core Processors

So, in the future I will be upgrading to a quad core processor. As of now I'm using AMD, but I'm not sure whether I should stick with it. I read that Intel processors are better for gaming and are better overall, also I noticed they carry better motherboards.

WITHOUT OVERCLOCKING

My question is, what would be the better processor to get? The Phenom of the Core 2 Quad? I'm not asking about personal experience, but benchmark performance. Which one is faster, more stable, will last longer, etc. Do not inform me about these though:

1) Core 2 Extreme
2) Processors above $300

Well I don't I'm going to purchase one any time soon, as I'm saving up for a car. But, just wanted to know this information when I do get a new processor and all that good stuff.

True that megawhompertoo. I upgraded from a 3000+ to a 4400+ X2 and the performance is not really noticable. Luckily the upgrade was free though :)

I beg to differ. At the time when I made my transition from single to dual core I markedly noticed a lot of benefits. All the background Windows programs were handled by the second core and the other core was dedicated to game.exe. Plus when the game.exe crashed I could relatively fast kill the the "not responding" program jamming the system because of the second core.

In general the second core has made Windows usage much more smooth since no single process is able to clog the system anymore.

^^ agree what he said + with compressing and decompressing it is tons faster...also transfering is like 7000billion times faster (mabe my old comp was slow but still) :)

dont buy the extreme cores,, not worth the small fortune tbh,

there will be new Quad cores released March hopefully Intel will sort its manufacturing problems.

The current Quads have no problem overclocking to somewhere around 3.4ghz with the right cooling and hardware you might get 3.6ghz if your lucky and give the processor alot of voltage

New with the new 45nm Quad cores you can push 4.0-4.2ghz looking at some inital reviews

And penryns dont overclock well at all 200-300mhz if your lucky
