Yes, but i think the Vista one will be a lot bigger. But i may well be wrong, could just be a few hundred megs.

Remember, service pack 2 came out years ago!

xp added a bunch of stuff w/sp2. firewall for one, and the service packs are also always cumulative, meaning they are supposed to contain every fix to date, so that you don't have to d/l install SP1, SP2, then SP3. therefore, SP3 will likely be 300ish MB, and require us all to make a new slipstreamed CD for a correct install. what i'm wondering is whether those of us with institutional bulk licenses will still be able to opt out of WGA, or if we will have to...erm...manually disable it.

it will be interesting to see how big the sp will be with vista. it's a fatter OS to start with, and they're throwing in DX 10.1 optimizations...

Depends on what updates are installed when you install SP3. For me getting it through Windows Update it was 122MB. The full installer is close to 900MB as it is for all versions of Vista plus whatever languages are supported.

Some of the stuff I miss most is cmd interface
Tried typing cmd in the Start menu search box? As far as that goes, if you know the name of the file/program you want you can find/start anything from there.

P.S. Vista 64 here, and no problems at all.

Thanks for the tip. This never has occurred to me.

To those moaning about Vista hogging I say that your rig is not really a gamng rig if it's not able to run Vista. Sure it sucks out some fps but the difference in most cases is not relevant really. Unless you are walking a tight rope with your game settings/hardware already.

Even after Vista SP1 RC1, I still had problems. I wouldn't drop the ca$h on it just yet. Wait till Summer of 2008 or later.

                            Here's a similar question,
As you guys can probably see, I mainly play Flight Simulator X. Under DX9, this game is predominantly reliant on the CPU for stuff like autogen etc., but under DX10 this is switched to the GPU. I'm getting an 8600GT and 2GB of RAM for Christmas, so I'll have a DX10 capable GPU and enough RAM for Vista, but my CPU is a 3.0GHz P4. I know the 8600 isn't brilliant for DX10 games, but do you think that in this case I might get a performance gain by switching some of the processing to the GPU by getting Vista and DX10 or will the CPU continue to be a major bottleneck whatever?

You will not be able to play a DX10 game on a 8600gt, no wai Jose.

They struggle on GTX's and Ultra's, let alone 8600 series!

Alex is right. The problem (and the boards are up in arms over it) is that MS directly renders almost everything, using a 10 or so year old process. From l'inq:

"FSX is rendering practically everything, forget about any modern 3D feature such as Occlussion Culling, Occlusion Querry and Z-buffer compression and putting a bitmap cockpit on blanked alpha texture, while everything else is being rendered."

Lol, lubberly screenshots though. It's a marketing ploy similar to nVidia releasing "optimized" drivers with deliberately broken/degraded eyecandy right after launching a new product to inflate raw fps when the cards are in reviewers hands and everyone is reading about them, then later releasing normal drivers to restore image detail at the expense of 7-15% fps.

Marketeers, always leading people to believe they are buying things they aren't.

                                /sigh
