In your opinion what should i do?

having brought a new computer and having vista 32 bit and 64 bit cd of home premium sitting on my desk for 3 months i thought.....

    Do the 64 bit man

but after firewall issues i cant fix and some games i cant run:cry:

I really HATE! the thought of going back to XP but i can also try vista 32 bit?

yes i know xp is the best games machine but it wont use my 4 gig right?it onlt see`s 3 gig right?which could be good as ARMA(armed assault) game has a error using 4 gig also

So if you running Vista 64 or 32 or even XP !,give me your opinion as im half and half!

*oh yeah i just had dirt game go bonkers in vista too,so it seems not alot of software can be used in 64 yet:cry:

    advice please:salute:

maybe vista 32 bit??it will only see 3 gig right?good for arma but not my extra ram module lol

advice on what you would do please

    edit:bf2 runs awesome tho

Any 64bit OS is not going to be a great OS right now simply because there is very little software that is written in 64bit which is why your having these issues. So right there off the bat, no to 64bit vista.

Now it comes down to 32bit vista or XP. Here is what you need to look at and consider:

    vista gives your DX10
    vista gives you headaches
vista is full of bugs which then leads to you not being able to play certian games
vista does not have full driver support for some hardware yet
vista is not very performance packed yet

    XP only plays DX9.
Every game you want to play is on DX9
    XP is performance
    XP is stable
Everyone is on XP - Could you help me out? Yeah sure.

vista example - I have vista and have these errors. No I can't help you out.

Get my point? Just stay with XP, vista doesn't offer you anything yet other than a rip off a MAC OS with a windows sticker on it.

I disagree with most of this.. Vista performance has caught up pretty good with XP. If your vista isn't stable then thats your fault with something you've tried or loaded and perhaps a hardware issue instead. There are Compatability and reliability patches out there go find them..along with SP1beta's lurking(but thats up to the user to try that) I have however heard and seen great things out of it so far.

Vista will take over where XP left off and keep going. You have the next OS to be released in 2010 so may as well jump on the wagon gamer or not.

Re: In your opinion what should i do?

        Running xp. no problems.

It looks like Microsoft "leveraged" their influence to give Crytek an incentive to exclude a killer feature in Crysis for DX9 users. DX9 servers won't feature deformable terrain (no 3d bullet holes, no falling concrete...one has to wonder if MS had them even remove Far Cry-style phyics), so Crysis will play a little closer to BF2 for DX9 players than for DX10* players.

I guess Microsoft had to find SOME reason to make their new OS relevant. Oh well, Crytek and MS thankfully solved my dilemma of whether to spend my buckaroos on Crysis or ET:QW the next time I get an itchy space bar (avatar).

So, if you can eventually get "The Wow"...(It Works!) factor out of Vista, and you are looking forward to trees falling and a few more lighting tricks in Crysis, and you plan on multitasking sufficiently to gobble up more than 3 gb of ram**, it would probably be worth it to journey to the Himalayas and have a IM session with the monk who understands how to fix deal-breaking issues in Vista. You may come down from the Mountain earlier if you stick to the 32-bit wide flavor.

*Vista SP1 will downloard with DX10.1, which makes DX10 hardware obsolete, along the same lines that Vista made DX9 hardware obsolete

**If you stick with XP, you should rotate your sticks every other time you change your oil. (no, that's a bad joke...you should benchmark it with 1gbx2, 1gbx3, and 1gbx4 and see which gives you the best results)

Coming from the guy who says a AMD opteron destroys a conroe with ease, why am I not surprised?

First off lets get things straight here.

            1) I don't use vista

            2) Read the threads, there is almost no XP related OS issues and if so, they are easily fixed and most people may assist in the troubleshooting.

VS vista, thats a wildcard. Someone has a problem, people are silent to help out. Don't try to argue that vista does not have bugs. SP1 is not released yet, and as for going with a beta SP1, I don't think many people will do that.

            3) You failed to see what rambo has. He has XP32bit, vista32 and 64 bit. He has all three of the OS listed here. The best one possibly for him to choose right now is XP. Why does he need vista to play DX9 games, answer that.

            4) DX10 is not here yet

            5) I think you like to be a guinnie pig in a lab or a little white mouse trying to find his genetically altered cheese at the end of a maze...

            6) OMG VISTA STRIKES AGAIN! DX10.1. Mine and your 8800 cards are obsolete but will still run DX10.1. However, don't expect all the extra tweaks compared to a true DX10.1 card.

            7) vista performance? You need twice the ram to run the OS let alone play your game. IE 4GB vista and 2 GB XP. Yeah your right man, performance and efficiency at its best!

            8) Could you tell us all again about you OC'ing you oppty to destroy say my E6600? I like a good laugh every now and then.

agreed but lets not get of track with flames:)and i do think sava700 had a point, but what is he actually running and experienced?.

I know XP! i can rule it and make it lean and mean

but i also want to be ready for dx10 very very soon.

and as gay as it is i like gadget sidebar lol (weather feed)

If i could do both of these on XP it would be the best:p

well, it's actually just a new spec that MS has given to vendors. like DX10, it probably won't be widely adopted overnight, and older cards will continue to work...

                      ...although...

...it may be MS way of ending DX9 by making it unfeasible to host DX9 servers, DX10 servers, and DX10.x servers, the way Crysis servers are set up to host DX9 and DX10.

Bad move on the part of the gaming industry, in my opinion, unless MS coughs up publishing deals/permanent salaries/stock options for studios that play ball.

For a "today answer" think about putting Vista on a partition and XP on a partition; run your DX10 stuff with Vista, and run the rest of the world's standard software in XP.

Edit, you posted right before I reposted.

An XP/Linux dual boot is easy; I imagine it's pretty much the same as partitioning is a fairly low-level operation. When you format, it gives you the option to create a partition and install to free space on that partition. You just allocate the amount of space you want for Vista, install, then put the install disk in for xp, and tell it how much free space to take up on the partitioned "virtual drive".

With two disks, it might be tempting to try one OS per disk, but you'd probably want to investigate further to make sure there are no MA/SL issues that you can't solve with a pop-up prompt from your bios.

And no, as best as I can tell, you're going to want to install the programs you PREFER to run under Vista under Vista, and the ones you PREFER/HAVE TO run under XP, and double install the ones you want access to under both OS's.

To touch off on that, its not really an issue because why would you want install BF2 (DX9 game) on vista anyways? You'll only need it on XP.

You're probably thinking, "geeze, thats a lot of rebooting to play my games until vista get an official release on SP1" but in fact this is better for your performance. After every reboot, the ram is cleared, refresh, empty, clean! I like to try to play one game at a time and then reboot for another intensive game so my ram is cleared and I get the best performance overall.

However, you may not notice that if you have 3-4gb of ram or maybe even 2gb. I know if you have anything less though, you really feel your computer slowing down after using difference applications in one session.

I personally think a dual boot is your best option, hence why I recommended it in another topic thread you had going on earlier. But if you solo OS'ing then XP is your choice. in a few months after SP1 comes out then vista will be worth the effort and troubles of formatting.

Ps. if your concerned about losing data and what not, just buy a ext HD with a usb connection. Yeah usb isn't the fastest but its the most compatiable and I love mine. It gives you a lot of freedom, kind of like a big floppy disk or usb 512mb flash card except your size is pretty big. Mines 320 GB =D

Vista without SP1 is fine. Just have to trim it till it's barebones, and add functionality that you need from then on and up. Working very nicely now, and nVidia has finally got their groove on.

The performance difference is around 1% between XP and Vista, at least on my machine.
