    Intel C2D E6600 Faster @ Stock Speed.

    Well I've been running my E6600 at 3.0 Ghz for a while. All the settings in the bios were right and my 3dmark score was slightly higher. 600Mhz is a pretty ok overclock for this processor. The memory wasn't overclocked, and neither was the pci-e northbridge bus. While running bf2 gave me like only 5-10 more frames a second, running programs actually took longer to load up. Windows itself was not ready to use after all the crap next to the clock loaded up for a like 20 seconds. And I don't run many things, just basically the logitech keyboard and mouse programs.

    So for shiggles, I clocked it back to stock speeds. Windows loads up WAY faster. Its ready to use in like 5 seconds once it gets to the start screen. BF2 didn't really see any difference. The Frame rates seem to be unoticeably lower, but smoother. So, what the heck is happening? I wasn't overclocking any of the busses, maybe the pci bus because the bios doesn't give me an option for it. The pci-e bus wasnt overclocked and neither was the ram. Perhaps the processor cache just doesn't operate correctly when its overclocked?

        shorts are giggles, i guess.

        anyway, it didn't help for me. lowered fsb to 240 and things are running slower.

          E6600 can hit 3.4 to 3.6 ghz on air cooling... And you get higher Bmarks too.

          Ummm, me thinks there wasn't a very big difference between load timings regardless of speed. Maybe I should OC it again and check it out, but to be honest I'm very comfortable with the stock speed as its plenty fast as is and I'm still usually first in a fresh round.

            just for shiggles, what temps are you guys getting on your 6600? I think I may have a bum chip because even with an aftermarket cooler (thermaltake V1), and using AS5 im still getting idle temps of 38 (@room temp of 74F). :hmm:

              Wow, with my Thermaltake Big Typhoon, my overvolted E6600 idles at 25-28c. What load temps do you get?

                ON THESE CHIPS, you need to put a thin line of thermal goop in between the 2 cores. Not just a dot in the center. It explains it online, I got way cooler temps. I use a Zalman flower. I don't even know the proper name fot it anymore, but its completely copper. It was designed for my AMD 4400, but they sell an adapter for it for the Conroes. But when I was at 3ghz the temps were no lower at idle than at 2.4ghz. However, when I was benching it (again with TAT) at 3 ghz each core hit about 65C. Thats a very acceptable max temp on a conroe using TAT which measures the temp of each core. My idle on core 0 was 28C and core 1 was 29C.

                Again, nothing other than intels TAT will stress the core to the max. Nor will you get more accurate readings from anything else. I ran prime95 on both cores and couldnt even break 60C. Max temp per core is 75C. Max combined reading, which is usually read from the mainboard, is 60C.

                I always seem to get chips that don't seem to OC well. So I'm not that dissapointed. lol

                  i cant remember anymore. I'll turn on logging and see.

                  I put the AS5 on exactly as it shows how to do it on the AS5 website. I even re-applied it twice just to make sure, and used Arcticlean 1/2 to clean it before applying AS5. I made sure it was applied perfect, which is why I'm thinking I got a bad chip.
                  My friend with almost the exact same setup using a XP-ultra120 cooler is idling in the low 20's.

                    you did it like this then?

                    I'm serial, that line is important.

                      I'm parallel, and I need some good thermal paste.

                        @2.4 ghz idles 27C

                        @3.4 ghz idles 30-33C In bf2, temp hit 48C

                        forgot what I was getting with 3.6ghz... Didn't really stay OC'd. Hmmm, I'm curious now i want to try 3.8 when I get home. =D

                          Have you got high ambient temperatures? That's a major factor. If the cooler is blowing in air at 20*C, it'll definitely be better than air at 50*C (my crappy case ).

                          Does anyone know when Intel's thermal throttling kicks in? I'm running 60*C on BF2 per core, guessing that it'll be around 75*C with Intel's TAT (usually is 10*C higher). Yes, it's bad, but that's what I get for horrid ambient temperatures + ****ty cooler + ****ty paste + ****ty motherboard. Sounds very much like the throttling is kicking in. I can drop a good 20-30*C by turning on this monstous fan, but it's too noisy and doesn't like 7V.

                          My PC feels very CPU-limited.

                          Holy ****, TAT is reporting 80*C per core @ 100% load :shock:

                            I believe it kicks in at 75c.
