I have an AGP computer and I don't really want to buy a new one so what are the differences between AGP and PCI Express?

1.) PCI-e delivers 4Gbps bandwidth up and down, which means 8Gbps total in full duplex. AGP 8x (3.0) offers 2.1Gbps and is for the most part, unidirectional. The full-duplex behavior of PCI-e is going to allow some really interesting (and possibly impressive) enhancements for graphics. And yes, PCI-e x16 offers more bandwidth than AGP both unidirectionally and bidirectionally.

Keep in mind the bandwidth isn't actually so important - Manufacturers have chosen to do most of the work locally on the graphics cards rather than over the bus. Even AGP 4x isn't maxed out to its potential yet and even the fastest processors cannot push the fastest graphics cards. So we've got a way to go before the extra bandwidth is really necessary.

2.) PCI-e offers more power directly from the bus. I think it is something like 75w. AGP is about 40w.

3.) PCI-e will be scalable to 32x and perhaps even beyond. AGP is at the end of its rope because of the complexity of the bus. And making it any faster is only going to increase the expense and push a dead-end standard. PCI-e is going to be less expensive in the long run because the bus is "simple".

4.) PCI-e allows dual video cards - And the appropriate bus technology to support the speed required for such a thing. AGP does not.

Davey if you need a Motherboard that will help you transition from AGP to PCI-E try this one. It has both which is a nice addition for those who have a good AGP graphics cards, but want a newer C2D processor.

Well, I'm not really sure which is better or even if different because of the replies, but I don't think im going to change to PCI-e. AGP is good. And dont they make a Radeon x1950 pro for AGP? or even just a x1900pro? thanks for the help.:)

Yes, the X1950 is currently the best AGP card you can buy.

AGP is dying. as stated above its not as powerful as PCI-E and its also a bit more expensive than PCI-E cuz theyre not making as many agp cards anymore.

Its adoption was premature, just like Vista, just like 64-bit addressing for home PCs (though that isn't off very far).

I definetly prefer PCI-E over AGP. And anyway's its easier to get cards for PCI-E nowadays.

so what that someone asked here for help or just asked a simple question? I just find it pretty sad that the people of this forum community can't help each other without making accurate comments giving facts. Its adoption was far from premature and as with Vista it is about time it came about. Its not Microsoft's problem companies like Nvidia and Creative are lagging behind. If it wasn't for companies like Microsoft we wouldn't be in this fast paced technology spoon feed world we live in.

Let me put it this way, PCIexpress to AGP is like USB ports to COM ports....if you haven't moved on to USB yet you need to be smacked in the damn head.

I have agp ati x800. When my motherboard fried I didn't feel like buying a board with pci-e and spending additional money for a another graphics card since I already had one, so I just bought a cheap board with agp-slot. I like it just fine. I'm running Pentium D 3.2 GHz btw.
