Re: AGP vs. PCI Express
I've been trying to explain this to people for years now.
It was a perfectly legitimate response. Graphics cards were not saturating the AGP bus at all, but they decided to shunt PCI-E on us to make people buy new motherboards in order to upgrade. "Why would they want us to buy new motherboards?", you may ask. New motherboards for new graphics cards that need new RAM or have different processor sockets equal a lot of money in hardware. Then they have all of the OEMs; HP, Dell, Compaq, Gateway, shell out to incorporate them in their new builds. Also, M$ being the cute little end-user-lovers they are, you have to buy a new version of Windows in order to upgrade your motherboard. Windows can overlook pretty much any hardware change except for a motherboard upgrade. Smart users know you can call in and get your OS activated for your new hardware with not much hassle. Most users either buy a new copy of Windows or go out and buy a new pre-built system with OS installed.
It's all about the Benjamins, yo!
This is a horrible comparison. USB ports didn't marginally increase performance and functionality over COM and parallel ports. They changed everything. A better comparison might be between Firewire and USB 2.0. They both have fairly similar performance, Firewire tends to cost more.
