Nice setup there, I would recommend vista 32 mainly because I use it (its good) and the 64-bit edition still has driver compatibility issues

I totally disagree ...I have no driver issues with the 64, and if you ever want to get to 4 gigs ram, you will need it. I had the 32, and had alot of problems running BF2. None of that is happening with the 64 ...definately get the 64.

If you've got a copy of xp you can use, suggest you save your Vista cash. There are no games on the horizon that are DX10-only. Once crysis comes out, teh interwibbles will be flooded with dx9 v dx10 direct FRAPS comparisons. Save your money and make your decision then, imho.

Yeah I am with megawhompertoo on that one. Crysis is the tipping point as without it XP would be just as viable an option as Vista but taking that fact the system has a Dx10 card and you DO want to play Crysis if you can wait until Crysis comes out and get some defo reports on weather it runs better under Dx9 or Dx10 then do that.

If you can't wait then grab a copy of Vista 32, it should do pretty much what you have described in your post.

Yes, grab XP for now. Vista is still in the beta stage. It's stable, though. More stable than WinXP by miles.

Re: what OS should i get?

I want Vista so bad but I don't see it being worth the money. I have Ubuntu, Mac OS X (yes I do have it running), and Windows XP. I had x64 XP at one time but I have odd devices here and there such as a Hauppage TV tuner and there were simply no 64 bit drivers. BF2 ran slightly slower on it, so I had no need for it. Sold it on eBay. And vista... well the only benefit is DX 10... for when games totally swap for DX10. Unfortunatly all game developers know that most gamers are not running an 8800GTS, or windows vista. So why are they going to produce a game that most people can't buy. They're not, thats why Crysis is still going to be DX9.0c.

This transformation to Vista and DX10 is going to take a lot longer than most people think. Take me for example. I just put together a new system:
              E6600
              2 gigs G.Skill DDr800
              Gigabyte P6N plat.
              7950GT (from last system)
              Neo HE 550 PSU
              and so on...
To get up to date with Vista and DX 10, the 7950, which isn't even a year old has to go. The 8800GTS is gonna be $280, and a genuine copy of Vistas gonna be 300 dollars. Yes I could get the OEM but thats only good for 1 install, and I don't really want that. So, nearly 600 dollars to upgrade to ... what? A nicer looking operating system. For that price I could get a 24 inch widescreen monitor and keep on playing with the setup I have.

So, right now Vista really isn't worth the price. IMO, stick with XP.

I agree vista is not the gaming os right now Game on XP now Upgrade to Vista later as simple as that i just ordered my laptop with a dx 10 card on it but degraded the os to XP PRO so that i wouldent experience diffuculties and issues with vista and my games then i would just be another vista victim lol!

XP pro all the way!!! VISTA drops EVERY game tested at least 20-40fps. See Tom's Hardware Guide for a list of games tested, but Doom3, FarCry, BF2, BF2142, SplinterCell, CalltoDuty, CS:S.....all drop significantly in fps using VISTA.

^ That's an outdated comparison. The latest updated Vista is far more responsive than XP, plus there are updated drivers which pretty much put the performance on par with XP. The only problems I see are memory issues, and driver signing on x64.

i just don't see the bang for the buck. Upgrade now and you get what? Premium prices? At this point, if you have a valid copy of xp, use that. Download the media center Royale Theme and it will look nice and dandy lol.

Yeah, the Royale theme is very nice

Beats the neon blue crap any day.

Upgrading to Vista means better memory management, more responsive OS, better UI by miles, including desktop composition, a revised kernel, DX10, a zillion back door changes, and overall a more stable (and possibly secure) OS. Stuffed to the brink with DRM.

There's a well known link detailing all the crap they did. Most notably, disabling unsigned kernel code. Pure ********, it gets bypassed every other week and by the time they patch out one, 2 more come along, and those are just the public ones.
