    Re: Ps3 Vs Pc

think you got a little too excited to bash me down and misread my post. I stated when ps3 first was released. Yes, you are correct about the current price listing after a 300 cut was done. Congrats.
Well you don't really have an argument then do you? What's the point of comparing the price of a console when it was launched over a year ago to the price of PC hardware just now, hardware that you couldn't have even bought when the PS3 was first released?

You two can keep thrashing out posts defending the gaming consol and argue its cheaper, which to a degree it is.
Well we don't need to do we, you've kind of lost the point of the thread. That a PS3 is cheaper, easier to use and will produce graphics on par with a modern PC. All of which are true, it seems there is little left for us to defend.

Actually, If you followed up in the bottom of my post, the ps3 costs about the same for a decent computer rig.

Let's pull out 1080p resolution too now while we're at it.

In order to take full advantage of the ps3, you need to buy the 1080p widescreen LCD tvs. This will cost you an arm and a leg. The cheapest I heard was one for $800-900 24" benq. The next cheapest was a week sale of a refurbished 47" lcd for $1300. Now if you want a nice big screen with high end quality, expect to spend $4000+.

You may be saying, "well I don't need a 1080p screen to play ps3" which is true but then why did you spend all that money for the superb graphics offered by bluray technology? VS my rig, I took advantage of everything I could.

The reason for comparing the launch price is simple, I built my computer when the ps3 was between 800-1000 after tax, so it is a great comparison for me to look at.

Yes, to a degree the ps3 is cheaper. The point was not lost. $1,000+ for a gaming consol is not a cheap solution anymore, but in someones eyes like yours its like taking candy from a baby I suppose.

I suppose when I put my rig together, a nice 24 inch lcd hd screen just appears out of thin air for free?

          Re: Ps3 Vs Pc

Time to end this rediculous discussion.

The PS3 is by far cheaper than any decent computers because of its life span.

The projected life span of the PS3 according to sony is 10 years. Thats a bit of a stretch so we will go ahead and cut that in half to about 5 years.

The average life of a decent PC ($1300) is about 2yrs. After 2 yrs you pretty much have to shell out another $1300 dollars to keep up with technology and modern games. Obviously something you dont have to do with consoles.

And BTW System...you tend to exagerate the prices of products when dealing with consoles. Not only do you choose the highest PS3's launch price but you also choose a big screen LCD screen. Theres countless LCD tv's around 20 or some odd inches that you can get for under $500 dollars.

Most PC gamers play on 24" screens and smaller. So why subject the PS3 to anything different?

There is no debating on this topic. So stop trying. Consoles are cheaper BY FAR....period. Just compare the sales figures.

Let me walk into my local supermarket, or a computer software store and I cant find a single solid PC title under 40 USD. At release, they were anywhere between 50-60.

            1) Ps3 consol 550 *now*
            2) extra controller 50
            3) 1-10 games avg 40-100 *I did a search, lowest being 40 highest being 100 and avg 50-80*
            4) gamng headset? 20-100

Taking that you buy your PS3 today and buy the cheapest games only x10 your final price tag comes down to:

            1020 x 1.14 = $1162.80
Im just scrolling through the parts I "would" need for an up to date computer rig.

            DVD-ROM - 20 USD
            Mobo - 300 USD
            Sound card - 10- 120 USD
            Mouse - 10- 100 USD
            Keyboard - 20- 100 USD
            Cooling - 10- 200 USD
            Speakers- 3- 30- 200 USD
            Headset- 5- 100 USD
            Monitor- 100- 3000 USD
            RAM - 60- 1000 USD
            Power- 10- 200 USD
            GPU- 100- 1000 USD

Games- I just picked the newest one I knew that was good enough.

            Supreme Commander - 30 Dollars
            vs
            Resistence: FOM - 60 dollars

So, to build a computer that you can be confident with for the next 3 years, you need a SH!Tload of more money than to just get a PS3, a decent 1080i TV and a home theatre surround sound system. As with any platform game, ****tier games cost less, better cost more. PC probably wins in that department only.

I wish you godspeed defending PCs pricetag in the future.

Me thinks he just cant accept that the console is for a "casual" gamer, and a PC is for someone more specialised on a certain type of games (ie. RTS, FPS, MMORPG)

              Re: Ps3 Vs Pc

              Those prices are f*cking insane.

              DVD-ROM - £10 (effectively correct)
              Motherboard - £50-120 ($100-220 USD when exchanged)
              Mouse - £10 - £50 (correct, MX518 is cheap as chips however)
              Keyboard - £10 - £50 (again)
              Cooling - Extremely subjective. From £10 - £500+
              Speakers - £10-50
              Headset - £2 to £100+
Monitor - £20 - £1000+ (if you're an idiot or just can afford to be extravagant)
              RAM - 4GB 833MHz - £100-£150
              Power - £50-£100 (unless we're talking el-cheapo trash)
              GPU - £50 (7600GT) - £400+ (8800GTX in SLI, 8800GTS 320MB @ £140, 640MB @ £180)
              2x 500GB SATA2 HDDs = £100

Now, at the minimum prices, which I bought my PC for, that all added up to a grand total of around £650-£750 (not entirely sure). Not very much, and it EATS games for breakfast with the exception of Bugfield 2.

The difference between this and the average person is that unlike them, I'm not a consumerist sh1thead and every single one of my buys was well-researched (aside from the RAM, but that's a different story - 1GB PC2-6400 goes for £17 now).

The way I see it, end object = Time + Money. Console = (Time * 0.1) + (Money * 0.9). My PC would be = (Time *0.7) + (Money *0.3), considering it was built on a budget and to tight standards.

For the social person, NOTHING beats Super Smash Bros with 4 controllers. Well, maybe Super Smash Bros with 8 controllers.

By the way, there are pre-built bundles for roughly the same price as a console, those without monitors are on par with consoles in every way in terms of price.

I live in EST. Prices are taken from a site which has every product on the market in EST, the site also notes price variations. A nifty little thing. Everything is roughly converted into USD.

But not in terms of graphics nor overall comfort of usability.

In simple terms. If I want a full package of playable PC pleasure I need to cough up about 15´000 to 20´000 EEK (1 EUR = 15.56 EEK), and thats not counting in 5.1 sound cards nor 5.1 sound delivery hardware, excluding gaming KB/Mouse and excluding a monitor. Note that, that package would last me about 3 years minimum. But it would be my top.

A PS3 costs about 12´000 EEK at the moment, but Ive got all the necessary gear to run it anyway (TV, sound system, and a damn comfortable sofa). I dont need to hurry with the PS3 either as I can buy it about 1-1.5 years from now (which Im planning to do) and all that will be lost is patience and price.

My current PC is a piece of crap to be honest and completely sub par to any standards set nowadays, with the cheapest RAM and a groovy ATI Radeon 9600. Its run by an old P4 3.0 PCU that is morally and technologically old. Complete, with monitor, gaming mouse and whatnot, and upgrades I made for it it has cost me a total of 10´000- 11´000 EEK. The only thing that I will not need to change is probably the ON/OFF leds and the MX518. PS2 (which I would have to compare my PC to) costs ~2600 EEK, and I would get a free controller and a mem card as a bonus at the current moment. When PS2 came out, it cost 9990.- EEK off the bat (PS3 originally cost ~14´000).
My PC is 3 years old, and when BF2 came out 2 years ago, I was playing on its minimum recommended specs with ~50 FPS on constant, it of course went to total fvckfest once patches started rolling, and currently BF2 is unplayable for me even when I did an upgrade.

                512 RAM to 1Gig
                9550 SE to 9600

An OK upgrade for the rig I had, with marginal and nonexistent practical results. Which means, after 3 years, I have to completely rebuild my PC.

So to conclude. I dont know how do you guys live, but in order to get a great gaming experience from a PC, I would have to chip sh!tloads of money into it, which for me would be money well spent (seriously), but it still wouldnt erase the fact that going for consoles would be economically cheaper if all you wanted to do, was to smash some electronic monsters, at any time you wanted to.

As it stands- consoles for casual gamers, PCs for someone who wants something in particular.

Okay time to end this topic now. A PS3 + Extra controller + 3 games + HDMI cable will cost you, today, £424. I challenge anyone to list me a PC that matches a PS3 with THAT £424 and since you want to focus on all factors lets say it also has to include a Blu-ray drive.

Haha, why does it also have to include their proprietary overhyped bullsh1t?

There's a thread somewhere around with a £365 PC build, with a few upgrades to make it equivalent to £424 it should easily match PS3 performance.

Id like to see that PC, I honestly would. I would also like to see how many of the graphical settings I would have to set to MIN to play BF2 with at least 30 FPS...

Numbers are just that, numbers. In numbers, my PC kills PS3.

That's precisely why I don't include the price tags on SLI-certified RAM, thank you very much.

Also, someone already HAS that PC and they supposedly play on all high smoothly (8500GT).

There's a ****load of these bundles on ebay, such as this one for cheap which will EAT CS and BF2. Dell also sells cheap as f*ck prebuilts sometimes. Most of those have poor component pricing balance too, with E6750 cpus and 7200 GPUs. If anyone genuinely wanted a good budget PC, they could simply get a similar build, with an E4300 and 8800x and overclock like there's no tomorrow (if that's even needed).

Bottom line, as long as we filter out the overhyped, overpriced trash, it's easy enough to get a cheap PC that will run today's games very well. The difference being, that games developers program towards the high end market, whereas console developers have a set standard to adhere to (until consoles become x86 and start running on a trimmed down version of Windows or Linux *cough*Apple*cough*)

Let's skip the overpriced trash and remember that these drives will eventually be emulated, not to mention that a hard disk is miles cheaper and miles faster and stores a ****load more, not to mention far better cost:storage ratio.

You seemed to miss the point I made. A 1080P 42+" TV (because thats the smallest they come in) will cost you over $4000. A computer, plays on a nice port called DVI. How much does a DVI monitor cost? Depends on which screen you want. Nowhere near $4000+ though unless you want to hook up to a monster widesceen TV...

Not true. I had a 5 year old gaming computer and it played BF2 on med/high settings when it came out. I only bought a new PC because I had the money. And I don't know what you do to your computers, but we have computers that are over 10 years old and run fine. Stop bullshlting.

In terms of upgrades, that isn't hard at all. When you build your computer you make sure you leave options for the future. When the price is right and you need a performance increase, do your research and you get a bang for your buck deal. Example, a common upgrade from old computers is 1gb to 2 gb of ram. Woah, less than $100 and your good for another 1/2 year to year.

                          Speakers- 3- 30- 200 USD
                          Headset- 5- 100 USD
                          Monitor- 100- 3000 USD
                          RAM - 60- 1000 USD
                          Power- 10- 200 USD
                          GPU- 100- 1000 USD

Games- I just picked the newest one I knew that was good enough.

                          Supreme Commander - 30 Dollars
                          vs
                          Resistence: FOM - 60 dollars

So, to build a computer that you can be confident with for the next 3 years, you need a SH!Tload of more money than to just get a PS3, a decent 1080i TV and a home theatre surround sound system. As with any platform game, ****tier games cost less, better cost more. PC probably wins in that department only.

I wish you godspeed defending PCs pricetag in the future.

Me thinks he just cant accept that the console is for a "casual" gamer, and a PC is for someone more specialised on a certain type of games (ie. RTS, FPS, MMORPG)
Me thinks you don't know how to shop for computer stuff. As camperstrike said, you've exagerated the prices. A decent mobo doesn't cost $300 and is more or less 80-150. Should you buy the best mobo? Sure why not, you only future proof your pc more making it easier and cheaper for upgrades.

Not to mention, with the mobo price you listed, you wouldn't a sound card because the mobo will come with HD realtek audio. Unless you must have the X-Fi chip and a creative logo sticker, there is really not a big difference between the two.

$1,000 ram? LOL!!! I've yet to see something like that. Most I have seen is 670ish and thats 2x2gb pc8500++ ram sticks. Stuff you absolutely don't need. We only need to beat the ps3 specs, you can drop that down to a max 150 - 2x 1gb pc8500 sticks.

Oh man, thanks for the laugh. I have to go to work now, I wish I could continue with this right now but no worries, I'll be back to see what funny post about how buying a new gaming consol is cheaper vs a computer.

Ps. my last rig was pretty much what you described, and I think your overkilling the prices or you jus got ripped off horribly.

Indeed, and its price would be right where I set it to- around 600-800 quid*.

So, 600-800 pounds on a PC to last about 3 - 5 years, or 424 pounds on a console that would last about the same.

                            * me personally- monitor, and all that jazz included, up to Meduza 5.1 headset.

Hmm, Ive never liked eBay, I try to purchase online as little as possible, but compared to local sets, the rigs there go for a bargain. Those rigs, and especially those prices have sparked my interest.

The average life of a decent PC ($1300) is about 2yrs. After 2 yrs you pretty much have to shell out another $1300 dollars to keep up with technology and modern games. Obviously something you dont have to do with consoles.
Really? Tell that to my Packard Bell which ran for around 8 years before being pieced apart. It was used for gaming for 6 of those 8. Also tell that to my brother's Acer laptop which is around 12-14 years old (Win95), I believe, still going strong. To keep up with modern games, the span is approximately 4-5 years from butter smooth 120fps to 20fps, and I've had to do this several times. That is roughly the same time between console generations. PC's generations shifting every 2 years is a good thing, not a bad thing. It means we don't get stuck with obsolete hardware for several years.

The projected life span of the PS3 according to sony is 10 years. Thats a bit of a stretch so we will go ahead and cut that in half to about 5 years.
Yes, that has about as much credibility as the Core 2 Duo's 10 year life span.

And as for the screen, don't make me laugh. Just don't even go there and save yourself some dignity. Wait, too late, you made yourself look like an utter pillock.

Actually, it depends on the speed of technology advancing. From the S3 - Voodoo (eurgh) years all the way to the first GeForce 4 series, there was very little change in performance and so on, meaning my ****ty PC could keep up. Now compare the 5x, 6x, 7x and 8x series, there is a world of difference. My PC died finally with the Radeon 9700 coming out, I think. I still played a little Team Fortress Classic at a wonderful 10fps (thanks, patches). Same with CPUs. We were stuck with Intels (Cyrix for the emo-non-conformist idiot with money) and the only real difference was clock speed. Then AMD comes along and kicks Intel's *** for around 4 years and now, we're back to Intel and nVidia sucking each other's arse and licking our wallets dry.

eBay is pretty good. I built my PC mostly from Scan though.

By the way, this Vision Master 454 cost ~£30. Killer deal. Up until the PS3 (PS2 also, but that's Sony only), NOTHING could beat PCs since you could buy a PC and emulate everything on it (PS1 had no manpower to build emulators, it seems).

I didnt "shop". Start reading. Since EST is a small country, its fairly easy to gather every price related information from the local PC market under one site. I picked the least expensive and the top, because I just wanted to make a point, and not research my nuts off just so it could be ignored in 5 minutes. You show exceptional lacking in reading aswell, so why bother.

Yup, so it would last me 5, instead of 3 years. Oh wait...

                                Great! With a 300 USD mobo I save 120 off a X-Fi

Youve already proven that technically it is cheaper, so why bother?

I wasnt "ripped off". There is a definite price difference because I live in Eastern Europe.

                                80 GB HDD
                                512 MB RAM
                                Some cheap AsRock mobo
                                P4 3.0

                                7500 EEK = 575 USD (I used 13:1 currency rate)

19 is too much for me, I love 17. I can get one of those for about 15-17 pounds.

And I disagree with you when it comes to emulating. To this point, Ive had limited success in actually being able to play PSOne games on one single working emulator, and I gave up on the previous gen console emulators altogether. Theres a selection of rare games I cant find anymore that I want to play (Twisted Metal 4 for example, cant find any PS1 copies). And I just gave up, because it got ridiculous when I downloaded emulator after emulator and they were all either working for some Madden game only or just didnt work altogether. With the newest consoles on the market, Im just going to pick a console that gives me the games I want to play and thats it. PC for multiplay of course.

As for old gear. Ive got a desk PC at my folks home- Pentium 1, 133 Mhz and has a "turbo" switch. Ive also got a 133 Mhz IBM laptop. But its laughable to say they can be used for gaming, and could have been used after 2000.
