i used to be a consoler, im a sony fan. i have a ps2, but i switched over to PC gaming. i was wondering is it worth getting a ps3 or just keep upgrading my comp? does anyone know what video card (ati/nvidia) has the equivalent power of the ps3??

the 360 uses the R500 or something like that, but if you want PS3 or 360 GFX, the new 8800's have that same power but it costs the same as a PS3 system lol, but come fall when Crysis ships you wont be sorry that you bought that card

Well that depends doesn't it if you can buy all the PS3 games on PC then their isn't really any need to buy a PS3 however games like GT5 and Final Fantasy will never appear on PC (well except maybe through emulation). So it really comes down to if you can live without PS3 exclusive titles.Comment

I quit playing FF after VII. I haven't seen any games coming out for consoles that aren't coming out for PC that I give half a crap about. Heck, I haven't played anything on my PS2 except for Katamari and GHII since GTA: San Andreas came out.Comment

Then you have effectively answered your own question then haven't you? If their are no games coming for the PS3 that generate intrest for you then why buy the console?
Also comparatives between PS3 hardware and PC hardware is pointless just now. In two years time better graphics on PC will be generated by newer hardware for all we know better programming on PS3 and 360 games in the same time frame may well yeild graphics that match these new PC hardware's graphics.Comment

The PS3's GFX "card" is roughly as powerful as a 7950GTX, in other words, any new GFX card will out do a PS# quite easily (the diff between a 8800 and the 7950 is just staggering, not to mention the fact that PC's are now running DX10, while ALL consoles are stuck to DX 9.0c.
ATI has no plans of releasing a card that will bump Nvidias 8800 GTX/Ultra off the top, they may, but it will not be for quite some time as far as i know of. This mans that Nvidia can take its sweet time bringing out its 8900 range as there is no direct competition. Nvidia has yet to release ANY type of date for the 8900 series which tells us it is at least 4-5 months away.
Very true, PC's are constantly evolving, and whats more, they cost less. Initially they cost more, yes, but then you can do small upgrades to keep them very fast, like $200 for another 2GB of RAM, $500 for a new GFX card, $200 for a new CPU, etc etc, its all very cheap once you have the initials.Comment

gaming consols are becoming more like a computer every release. the PSP is a portable computer!
To top it off, they use a totally different gaming format. It kind of looks like that physx card bs with a few games requiring you to buy it. You have to pay a handful of money for the hardware to play exclusive games on it as mentioned above... WTF? Screw it, the road is ending fast for gaming consol lovers as much as it seems to be at its greatest ever now... Use your logic, what exactly can they release now that gives you an "edge" over a computer? Oh wait, a mini computer with bad temperatures and a logo name slashed on the size "xbox 480/ps4/ nintendo wayne"Comment

A system that isn't aimed at the graphics junkies who use only THAT as an argument for why their system is the best. Get a grip man you really think that their isn't or never will be a market for gaming that prefers the simplicity of going out buying the console grabbing a game whacking it in and having it load without the hassle of; checking that it works on their system, installing it, patching it, and then the inevitable two days spent trying to work out why the game still doesn't run.Use your logic, what exactly can they release now that gives you an "edge" over a computer? Look at what you're saying, that the home PC will do away with the home console. People have been saying that for the last 10 years and during those last 10 years the PC has out powered the home console yet it didn't stop the PS2 from going on and selling 200odd million worldwide.Comment

Okay...who ever said that a computer is cheaper than the PS3 is out of their minds. Consoles are generally for the casual gamers where as the PC crowd are more towards the extreme gamers. Before choosing I would recommend you consider what kind of gamer you are 1st. I love FPS's and the online play that comes with it.
When judging if I wanted a PS3 I looked at its online capabilities before making my choice. Ive come to learn that I cant play games for an extended period of time on single player any more. I grow tired of single player pretty quick. A games online capability and playability ultimately determines my decision. This is definitely not the case with everyone. Thats why I stated before to figure out what kind of gamer you are.
All in all you want to make the decision that will garner the most bang for your buck.
PS.......Well put "The Laughing Man". If anything its the PC gamers that should be worried. Consoles are slowly reaching PC capabilities. You hit the nail right on the button when you mentioned the practicality a console offers. I've always compared the PC and Console market to the tuner and auto market. The tuner crowd is more like the pc gaming crowd. You know the type of people that like to get all in the guts of their equipment by upgrading and tweaking things to get the most out of their equipment. While the consoles are more like the mainstream car market...you know the honda accords and toyota camry buyers. Where practicality, reliability and availability prevails. But unlike cars.....consoles are slowly closing the gap between the extreme and casual. It will only be a matter of time before a console becomes the focal point of entertainment for the family. Offering web browsing, large enough hard drives, even upgradable hard drives, and an online experience that matches or even surpasses that of the pc. I can go on and on about this....but having an all in one wonder machine is the future. People might as well get used to the idea that PC and Console wars will come to an end. There will be no victor though....just more of a merger and itegration kind of thing.Comment

I disagree.
People who still buy gaming consols are the ones who are in love with a special series of games. The other justification to buy a gaming consol was for your kid because it was $200-400 when released - Oh wait, excuse me, they are closer to $800-1,000 now.
When N64, PS2, and Xbox were all out I would agree with you. The fact of the matter is that the prices have jumped terrifically. Mom and dad don't want to spend that amount of money for a gamig system for there children.
The only part I will agree with you is the hassel of computers at times although you make it seem like a world of fear on a day to day basis which is not true.
The idea of a computer home entertainment system is very real today. I've hooked mine up to a 50/60" LCD with surround sound and played my games like you would on your ps3. I've surfed the net, did my e-mails, talked to friends on msn, watched movies, and listened to music - Everything you want in one room with a big screen and good speaker system. Though I suppose it is a harder arguement now for me to use the "more options" attack on gaming consols because they are basically a computer in a box with slightly less features.Comment
