The GPU forums are full of people who didn't upgrade their PSU's complaining of blue and black screens, varialble or just simply low frame rates.
The x1950xt sucks a lot more power than the x1950pro, I got an x1950pro and bout a Hiper 580w atx2.2 crossfire certified PSU just in case I bought another x1950pro to go in there.
a 350w PSU from an office pc will ruin your day!Comment

Full load power on a high end system won't even exceed 180 watts in power draw.
He won't have a problem with such little power draw. If there is one good thing about HD 2600 series cards, they don't take alot of power. They don't even have power supply connectors on the cards, they take all the power they need from PCIE slot.
Those are high mid-range/high end cards of their day. They take alot more power to run than a mainstream HD 2600.Originally posted by [R-PUB]MrDComment

Yes My appologies, it is a Pentium D, sorry for the confusion all, I should of checked that out before.
Once again, Sorry.
Also I did realise that the HD2600xt does lack in performance to the 8600gts, but I was wondering if I should spend the extra AUS$100 I would save if i bought a HD2600xt on something else to aid my system.
Edit: Ok I've decided on the 8600gts but I am wonderig if it would be better off buying the 512mb Version or the 256mb. The 512 is a little more expensive and I'm only gaming on 1024x768 resolution, so would the 256mb version make a difference in say bf2?Comment

I doubt it. 256MB is fine for 1280x1024 and under. I'd only consider 512MB if it was less than $10 extra.Comment

You will need at least a 650-800W PSU especially if your system is loaded with drives and USB devices.

Please stop yourself now. I'll give you some good reasons.
1). It's DX10 capable but so what? Do you run Vista? No offence but the only DX10 games that are avaliable and will be avaliable in the coming year require systems far and away beyond what you currently have.
2). In general terms the 8600 is prettu pathetic. A magazine I buy has recently done a group tes of ALL the GPUs that can currently be purchased. They did group tests using STALKER, FEAR and NFSP Carbon. The 8600 faired poorly in all of the games. At all Resolutions wand all settings of AA and AF. If you really want to buy a new GPU then buy a X1950pro. Here in the UK their is only £30 a difference between the 8600 and the cheapest x1950pro but in the group tests the X1950 consistantly beat the 8600.
Finally A 350W factory installed PSU with a 8600GPU (or a x1950) and a P4 Dual Core is just crying out for something to go wrong. It's all very well coming up with numbers for what the power draw should be and whilst this tool
does indeed confirm that the PSU should be able to provide the 257W that your system with a P4 D will need it is all based around the assumption that his PSU is efficient enough to provide the power needed should the system require maximum power draw.
Lets put it this way I ran a cheap as chips £30 640W PSU, this unit, in theory should be able to easily supply power to the system I was running back then (A 630 P4 oc'd at 3.6Ghz with a 6800GS). It should surely have made mince meat of my current £80 580W Hiper unit. So why did I keep getting CPU lock ups which mysteriously disappeared after I replaced the PSU?
Simply it was a cheap PSU that couldn't supply a reliable/stable supply to my 12V rails.
The point is however moot since the 8600 are pretty rubbish any ways. They may well be DX10 ready but since their are no DX10 games out there what's the point? The OP would be better off getting a X1950pro which is more capable of playing games like FEAR and NFS Carbon at higher a res with a better FPS than either of the 8600 cards.
If you're a gamer looking to buy a new card then forget ATI's DX10 effort. It's rubbish, overpriced and in some games has trouble keeping up with the 8800GTS let alone besting the GTX and GTX Ultra. Forget anything below a 88 series Nvida and just stick with the older and far more capable DX9 cards.Comment

Yea, Hiper 580W are very good. They have all the right connectors, are stable under load and are British designed.
However, one of its main USP's which influenced my choice to buy it was the packaging. Most PSU's you get have a cardboard holder but the Hiper comes with a whole friggin' toolbox. Its very good and i can now use it to hold all my tools and spare comp parts. Check it out:

Ok Now I am completely confused
so many people, so many different opinions.:cry:
I chose the 8600gts because it had reasonable power for its price.
So let's say I don't go directx 10, say I just go DX9. Can someone recommend a SOLID graphics card that is in the AUS$300 or Cheaper range.Comment
