Thinking about buy fan(s)

Recently when playing battlefield for 30min + i see a black screen flash for a second. In special forces, i think i see artifacts where the sandbags go all metallic-looking. I go to nvidia monitor and i noticed that my video card is now running 70 C +. It gets hotter every week. Ive heard that heat could damage the card and decrease its life span.

recently while browsing tigerdirect i noticed these fans for 10 bucks:



they have good reviews, and it seems like a bargain.

now the problem is that im a relative dummy at computers. The hardest thing ive done is install a pci-e video card.
My questions:

-Anyone have this fan kit?
-Is it all bark and no bite?
-Does there need to be many considerations before purchasing, such as space inside tower, plugs etc...
-If so, is it easy to install?

any of these questions answered in a post will be greatly appreciated.

Specs in sig. My tower is a dimension 5150, dont know what motherboard i have but it came with it (PCi-E).

I would not put those fans in!! You can buy a fan card that has 3 fans and fits in a PCI slot right next to the PCIE Video Card, and these work much better!!!!

You can also ajust where you want the fans on this card. I have mine set with 2 fans on top of card blowing down on video card, and one fane on side blowin on back side of video card.

Zalman also makes replacement fans for the nVidia cards which cool them more than the manufacuter fan that came on the card.

You can also by a PCI fan that blows air out the slot on the back of your PC instead of blowing more air around inside the case.

Cleaning your case and cable management are the best solutions to keeping your computer cool!!! Also having a big enough Power Supply will also keep things from overworking and heating up your rig!!!

Good Luck cooling your system down!! Remember AIRFLOW is the key!!!

agree w/above posters.

summer is upon us, with associated heat waves. your pc pro'ly needs cleaning to allow better airflow.

as long as you balance your intake with your exhaust, more fans wouldn't hurt.

kula suggested a pci fan. in your case, dropping one in below your gpu to exhaust the hot would probably help a lot:

i found only one fan card on tiger, here it is:



the name is Vantec Spectrum PCI Fan Card
could my motherboard possibly have a pci slot?
it cost $23 bucks, would that work? how much degrees would it bring my gpu temp down?

another question.. how does it work? do you just insert it in and it stays on always?

EDIT: im gonna open it up right now and clean it up with a small vacuum, and possibly see what slots i have.

im canadian, and it seems to be the cheapest. the link is american. nonetheless i searched "slot fan" and found more variety.

i see how these fans work now, they just slide in and dont actually plug into the slots.

one last question though, is there a wire i have to plug into the power source or something?

im canadian, and it seems to be the cheapest. the link is american. nonetheless i searched "slot fan" and found more variety.

i see how these fans work now, they just slide in and dont actually plug into the slots.

ah! canadian. i forgot to check.

some of them (i.e., the one you linked to earlier) do plug into your pci slot. i would personally not advise these, but i don't a really have a good reason for why. others (the one i linked to) will run off the same type of four-pin plug your plug your CD/DVD drive (inless it's a SATA).

ideally, you want one with a three-pin plug to plug into your MOBO and then run a program like SPEEDFAN to achieve the best combination of reduced noise and increased cooling. you could also buy a separate adapter (google "fanmate") to achieve the same thing if you don't have a three-pin fan header on your mobo.

still, along the lines of your original post, making sure you've got sufficient fresh air intake is important. if you don't have a front fan and do have a slot for one, plop one in and enjoy the results of increased cold air coming in and increased hot around your gpu being blown out with the pci blower.

don't worry. this is easy stuff.

four pin = four wires from your psu plug directly into the fan. aka "molex". only provides power+ground.
three pin = three wires (power+ground+speed sensor), plugs into your mobo, and will let you monitor/control the fan speed with software.

i like the one i posted, too, as long as you have room.
