You could drop the drive in another desktop and wipe it if you think the data is faulty. If you're going external, I would check into e-sata.

Boot from the vista cd, then click "repair" and use all the options given. Do a chkdsk also (using the command line).

If that doesn't work, just install vista over again, using the "upgrade" option (XP used to have this setting called "repair").

ive said that i cant even get into the cd, and to mega i dont have e sata so firewire would be it for me unless i bought nother internal sata,and if i moved it to another computer woulsnt i run into the same problem?

it's possible, but i'd sincerely doubt your win me ii infection (vista installation) would over ride your bios settings in two different machines with respect to two different drive types and letters.

then again, i don't put things past the M$ crew. heard of WGA? other M$ DRM infections?

on the e-sata, i had you confuzzled with someone with a p5b-e like mine.

well i ran into something new i guess u can say,i hit enter and it brings me to "choose a os to start and it displays vista choose it then right back to where i start,and i hit f8 ti display advanced options,none at all.

microsoft tech supprt on the phone sucks,i had some guy probably in india on the phone who didnt understand that windows IS NOT starting and that i cant left click on the windows icon or go to properties.

i know it's been said, but it certainly does seem like you are letting your hd be a boot device. are you sure you turned your hd off and only have your optical enabled as boot?

either that, or windows me ii beta is even worse than i've heard.

Are you using a full vista cd or and upgrade from XP? If an upgrade then you probably need to try to reinstall XP first?? Just throwing that out tthere since so far it seems like your fighting a losing battle going uphill in mud.

Ps. I don't think you can install an OS on an EXT hd.

Hey, that's a good idea. In the past, you'd load your upgrade CD, then the new OS would ask you to insert a copy of your old one, verify it, and then prompt you to put in your upgrade back in to continue w/install. With Vi$ta, I dunno? Checking whether or not an XP disk will be detected might be worthwhile.

Ps. I don't think you can install an OS on an EXT hd.

I think OP was just trying to reformat the hd as an end-run around it being detected as a boot device instead of his optical.

It looks like your hard drive took a ****.

That's the only plausible explanation for it failing to boot at several different stages.

UPDATE****

i took the hdd and put it in thsi computer to format it,inserted xp disk all was going well,deleted partition(warned me hdd might be unusable after) and selected delete then i went to get a drink of water it had restarted telling me to press any key to start cd which i did but nothing happened for 1 minute,so take it back to my computer,start it goes thru bios then im staring at a white line going thru the lower half of ym computer.

It sounds like it may not be properly formatted? Try finding a version of linux to boot into and format it properly there.

Did you format (not quick format) the drive as NTFS under xp, or just delete the partition?

Might try using different SATA ports...

Otherwise, (as unlikely as I would have thought) there's a possibility ~^^^ may be right--your hd might be fried, or possibly your southbridge. Can you try a different HD?
