    Ram Issues

    Hey,

Well I went and bought another 2 sticks of 1gb pc8500 ram for a total of 4 gbs.

issue is that i keep crashing to desktop while in bf2. I also tried to run benchmark06 and it crashed too as it started. The voltage levels for the ram are 2.3v and I use the auto settings which is putting it at 1.85v.

I tried running it at 2.1v manually but no difference...

So I'm bummed out, and buzzed and frustrated for the second nite in a row... I think I'll end up returning these 2 sticks in the end but if there is a solution, please - let's hear it.

check your BIOS, make sure the Cas Latency, the Timing, and the Voltage are set correctly according to the products specs

yeah, you got an imbalance somewhere. you have to go through bios and check everything. is that your specs in your sig? (cause if it is, that should be running nice) has this only started happening when you installed the new ram, and does it get stable when you remove it? (if so, it could be bad ram, or overheating?) what Operating System? i'm just to trying figure out what to point the finger at.

        Re: Ram Issues

yes these are my exact system specs and the issue only occures with the new ram added.

Take it out and presto! nothing bad happenes.

As for OS - XP pro.

As far as the Bios goes - I keep all my settings on Auto except for over clocking. I have access to change my cpu multiplier (6-9 which it is at 9x) and FSB (1511 mhz). I can change the bus speeds individually too so my ram won't run over its specified speed (1066). I have my ram at 1057 mhz right now so its not surpassing its limits in any way.

I will install the ram again tomorrow and check if the timings are messed up. Otherwise, its a return.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I don't think its a over heating issue really either. After playng bf2 and having it crash I'll turn off my computer and power and then remove my ram. At the time I remove it, it is barely warm to my fingers. Touching my vid card and it is a great deal warmmer compared to my ram. I'm hoping it is just messed up timings or bad ram... If it is a timing issue that I can fix than I'll keep em but otherwise, I never opened the package and didn't realize my computer only takes sdram mem *cough cough*

              Re: Ram Issues

is the motherboard able to handle the 4gb of ram? if so ya might just have a bad stick even though its new, u got 2 new sticks, have u tried to put one in & see if it still crashes?

i've had that happn to me, but not regular, i just chalked it up on a weird glitch, i'd say it happens 1-2 times a month on me.

If the RAM is rated is rated to run at 2.3v, and you're trying everything but 2.3v, you might consider trying 2.3v. Your other sticks are the same RAM? Or different?

I guess you were just throwing that out there because its off topic from my issue but thats ok. You don't need VISTA64 bit though. I can use XP64 bit and or my new linux ubuntu 64bit OS which I'm still pending on installing.

when you ask handle 4gb of ram, I'm assuming slots and therefore YES. If its something else you meant, then I'm not sure. All I can say is I bought the best mobo I could find one to two months ago for 300 bucks. It better damn well be able to handle 4 GB of ram =D

Really? When I turned on this new computer it was nothing but blue screen for the first bit (tried to install a defective HD). Now it runs great, minus this fluke in upgrading my ram.

I was waiting for someone to point that out. The whole point of testing it at 2.1v was because I thought it was 2.1v rated while I was in there. Had to go on the OCZ site to look at the voltages.

I was going to up it to check if it would make a difference but, my first 2gigs runs flawless at 1.85v O_o.

And yes, they are the exact same as my 2gb of ram sticks in my computer. Though it would be nice to keep them matching =D

Everyone is saying a defective stick anyways. I'm going to return these today. I have to be quick on it, canadacomputers isn't the best warranty/return policy out there.

Your decision to make. Generally, the first thing I try to do when trouble shooting a component is to try it within it's published engineering specifications. That's just because I find having to wait on the RMA process a little bit of a hassle unless I have some logical reason to believe I have a broken part. On the other hand, some people just enjoy the simple pleasure of getting mail, so I won't sit in judgment, especially if you're up against a wall with RMA eligibility. :)

FWIW, doubling the number of components your mobo is having to regulate power to, (I.E., plopping in 2 more sticks of ram) can have an adverse effect on the efficiency at which your mobo can regulate the total number of those components. Something to consider if you get your RMA and still aren't able to run your hardware out of spec.

                      Ok,

I'll try it one more time and this time I'll put the v to 2.3 and check the timings.

Just to double check, according to the sticker on the ram its 5-5-5-15, so those are the numbers I should see in the bios right?

And I only bought this ram a few days ago, I believe I have 30 days for a direct replacement. No air mail =D

Doing so would give you a fairly good indication as to whether or not you've got bad sticks.

                        Yes indeedy.

PS. A diagnostic like memtest might also be of service to you.

Well, yeah u need the slots, but what i meant was your motherboard has a limit on what those slots will hold, like mine has 4 slots that will allow up to 1gb in each slot for a max.
I found mine in my motherboards handbook.
If u bought a killer MB then i'm guessing 4gb ram isn't stressing it.
                          hope it helps.

Ahhh, I thought you were talking about something else. I can't recall it but I'm sure its high. I remember 4-8gb?? Its the only numbers coming to mind right now.
