New Rig..

Well i've been off for a long time wow binje..and well i haven't been keeping up on new hardware and things... my budget is around 2k-3k and id like a great machine that would last me..atleast a good year or 2..anyhow this is the only place i could think to come for a quick good response..

I would hope 2-3K would last more than 1 year. :shock:

for about 2k you could build a pretty good gaming machine:

cpu: e6600
mobo: evga 680i
ram: 4gig muskin 2x2g
vid: BFG 8800gtx OC
hsf: thermaltake V1
hdd: 2x raptorX in raid 0
snd: X-fi
case: P180b
Psu: Antec neoHE 550
opt: dvd-rw drive

of course that doesnt include an OS. you would need vista or XP x64 to take advantage of the full 4 gig ram.

^ thats pretty much what im building this weekend, minus the 2nd raptor. If you wanted to spend a little more you could get a quad 6600 and a nicer case like a CM Stacker. those components should last you at least a year. :)

would be easier to get 2x2gb ram sticks so you dont fill all your ram slots and waste money in the future having to buy 2x2gbs.

you dont really need a 3rd party cooler with the E6600 stock does a pretty decent job,

oh and dont forget the PSU Corsair 520w/620w will be fine

Ill have to look up temps for the stock hsf, but i usually go with aftermarket hsf's.

I have an e6300, and just got a new case, cooler master centurion 5, it has a 120mm fan in the back and an 80 mm in the front, and my cpu is still around 45 C as it was before. I don't understand how you get yours down to 15-20. I've also bought artic silver thermal paste and that brought it down a little.

you DONT get it down to 15° unless your room is 15

go for aftermarket cooling, running cooler will make last longer, be quieter and you can overclock more.

I wouldn't listen to everest if I were you. Get a real temp monitoring program like coretemp or tat.

Tyvm for the tips..ill see what i can do =P. would it be worth going for a 8800 ultra instead of the gt? ive heard its 20% faster.

No, definitely do not get the ultra. Get a normal gtx and oc to instead.

Well then your room must be that temp, as air cooling will NOT go below ambient by more than .5°. You've also got speedstep on, as there is NO other way.

My 3 GHz AMD (WITHOUT Cool 'n Quiet) 3700 loads at about 45° and is running at 33° with 10% load and the fans at 10% (at 100% i would loose a degree). This is on a Zalman Reserator water cooler (and this performs about the same as the leading air cooler)

agreed. the price step to an ultra is too much for the exact same specs (except for core and mem speed).

I went with a BFG factory overclocked gtx who's core is actually clocked faster than some standard ultras:

There was just an article in June's MaximumPC about the problems getting an accurate temp reading on a 'Core 2' chip. I think they said the bios has the closest reading to the actual temp.
