I said I am not a fan boy except with nvidia. So please back down. ATI sucks - they have horrible drivers in my opinion, and their cards are low level. Especially after what they done to x800 when nvidia already had shader model 3.0 out, and users that purchased that 400 dollar card with ATI were left in the dust.

I was surprised that they didn't do well, I mean ATI has had awhile to actually counter nvidia with something better. A lot of people expected ATI to come out and blow nvidia away. Then again could ATI of hit a road block? It seems like they have more stream processors, higher core clocks, and a 65nm process. All those things should mean it'd be faster? I guess we will have to wait for the 8900 series to see if there truly is a road block.

Thats one single GTX by itself that beat two ATI 2900XT's in cross fire. It wouldn't be fair to stick the GTX in SLI and compare them. The ultra didn't beat two GTX's in SLI, because on this benchmark there is not a GTX in SLI.

no, i trust reviews from well respected reputable websites, not fly by night fan boys websites. obviously you must be new to the whole pc hardware review scene if you dont understand that anandtech and toms hardware are pretty much the definitive and only non biased and most reputable hardware review websites, actually i have an 1100 watt power supply, why would i buy cards i couldn't properly power, like i dont know how much power they consume. sounds like you have a bone to pick. if your buying two gtxs, enjoy the blue screens because the nvidia sli drivers are garbage. youd be much better off with one ultra.

i linked the wrong graph in that first one for bf2 results, it wasn't the multi gpu performance. heres the correct one but it still is missing the gtx sli results.

for a nvidia fan boy you should know better or you dont run sli, nvidia has more blue screen driver issues than ever. i dont know anyone with two gtx's in sli that arent blue screening at least 3 times a day if they dont use riva tuner to under clock their gtx's and thats not even mentioning about the quad sli drivers that can only utilize 3 of the gpus.

ive used many ati and nvida products and i have absolutely NEVER had a driver issue with ati, tons with nvidia during the 7900 days. the only ati driver issues are with this brand new card, they havnt even finalized any yet. ive never even heard of a discussion forum even mentioning any ATI driver issues for established equipment, its a different story though for nvidia, type "blue screen sli" into google, tell me how many pages of results you get and that card is over 6 months old, youd think they could engineer some reliable drivers by now.

im no fan boy, ive owned many nvidia products, it just so happens as of right now my gaming rig is sporting ati because when dual core came out its the only choice there was for more than one gpu, i didnt wait around for 3 months to get my x6800, i pre ordered mine and crossfire was the ONLY dual gpu available platform at the time of release, there were no sli motherboards and there was no 8800. you'll notice most people running ati crossfire are the ones who didnt sit around and wait to jump on the dual core bandwagon, they were the first ones aboard and stuck with crossfire.

i just bought a 8500 for my media pc last week and guess what, im having boatloads of driver issues, its almost comical to see the way nvidia drivers act in vista, theres a reason vista owners have started a class action lawsuit against nvidia and its not for their attention to detail.

your also forgetting this is old tech, it was supposed to be out at xmas so of course its only going to perform as good as what was out 6 months ago, hence the $399 retail instead of $800 like the new ultra.

some of us dont have a choice, we want to keep with a proven winner and quality motherboard, your all forgetting how many crossfire only motherboards there are out there. if it weren't for nvidias craptacular sli drivers i would of bought a new sli mobo and two gtx's but the ONLY reason i didnt are nvidas garbage drivers that blue screen every single day and the fact that i didnt want to gut an entire water system to install a new mother board. i probably should of considered just going with one gtx or one ultra but i dont have this crossfire bad axe motherboard for looks.

this from the guy running the 3 year old cpu and 2 year old video cards.

elaborate, just dont try to be some backseat flamer, according to google, yahoo, msn, and cnet those two are the most popular and reliable websites for hardware reviews. whats funny is how you need reassurance to flame someone when you didnt even research the answer, i mean it would of taken you all of 2 minutes.

I don't want to argue about drivers or anything, but just to comment about Ati drivers... Lots of people say ati drivers are better than nVidia nowadays and I agree, they're stable and perform well, however...

I bought a 1950 Pro just because it was cheap and fast, and ati drivers were supposed to be good. This card, or rather drivers, have been the worst computer hardware nightmare I've had so far. They are stable, not a single bluescreen, they're fast, with Ati tray tools everything is so easy. But.

I have rather uncommon setup since I have a 24" widescreen CRT runnign at insane resolutions at insane refresh rates. I don't know why, but I can't even alt tab to windows because the changes for the system to hang are about 50/50. Not to mention that I can't change much settings with ati tray tools without system hanging. I can't play at 100Hz because the card can't take it, it just keeps freezing while changing resolution/refresh rate. When I tab to windows or shut down a game it sets the desktop res the same as game. Refuses to change without reboot. I can't use custom resolutions because ati does not even know what "custom resolution" is.

Overall, wouldn't mind a bluescreen now and then If drivers would work like nVidias. I can't understand how simple a person must be to call these "good" or ever "better". Probably with an LCD with constant res and refresh rate these might work, but CRT is a no go. I probably boot this because of display drivers 5-10 times a day, I couldn't play CS:S for more than 20 mins without freezing at some point, but I think I found a fix for that. Overall I can't describe how I feel about these.

I'm never getting another Ati again, and I feel sorry for those who do.

And don't say try different drivers/system/format/card/whatever, I've done that.

E: and forgot to mention that with a 7900 GTX problem count: 0, plus about a thousand times easier to set up everything and even use custom resolutions and timings, something which seems impossible for ati even with PowerStrip or similar.

Of course you are, but that doesn't matter. He wanted ati to have a better card, and so now they do (to him).

Honestly, if you want to waste your money on inefficient, loud, slow cards that get beat by cheaper ones from nvidia, go ahead.

elaborate, just dont try to be some backseat flamer, according to google, yahoo, msn, and cnet those two are the most popular and reliable websites for hardware reviews. whats funny is how you need reassurance to flame someone when you didnt even research the answer, i mean it would of taken you all of 2 minutes.

                Re: ATi 2900XT Benchmarks (reliable :p )

I agree. With AMD and Intel its a processor, if ones faster then the other, it is. The next upgrade you go with the ones that are going to be faster. I was AMD then I went Intel... Graphics cards, see to me nvidia are just about the only CARD's I can trust. BSOD's? Where did you grab that bit of information. Go on over to nvnews.net and read how many people have issues with nividia cards that related to SLI+ BSOD. ATI has done nothing but cheat its customers... We've seen what they done with the x800.. Nvidia users got shader 3.0 on the 6 series, ATI's card to compete with the 6 series was the x800 with Shader Model 2.0+ or w/e.

nvidia's new cards are great. Sure nTune blows, but to me it runs stable, it does what I need it to. I use to own an ATI 9600XT both had issues. I had the first one about a month before the fan failed, and literally I kid you not burnt. I got a different card from bestbuy, and the fan didn't burn no, it just quit working. They tried to offer me a 9600 SE card without a fan. I ended up getting 5950 Ultra and that was suppose to be nvidia's worst card ever. However from my experience with it, it was great. I upgraded from that to an nvidia 6800 Ultra AGP 8x, from that to a 7800 GTX, and now I own a 8800 GTS. I've had them ever since. Even ATI fan boys over at official ATI community sites are disappointed in ATI's lack of performance.

Review sites are review sites... Techreport is a very reliable site. They went into grave detail about the anti aliasing.. If you read the whole article you'd see. No the ATI 2900XT does not suck, but single GTX card is competing with it, when its in crossfire. It may not be running as high in FPS but 144 to 157 is a huge difference. I've seen benchmarks in DX10 to ATI again loses. Its not hard to see that ATI has fallen.. They've made some great accomplishments, but when it comes down to it, nvidia has a lot better experience in making graphics cards. We know this because they've came along way. They have nice drivers. Lets not forget nvidia's success with the 680 chipset. I had an Intel motherboard before, I could get 3.00GHZ . With the 680i eVGA I can o/c to 3.6GHz at a nice stable speed. This is on air, thats insane. I am sure if I had water cooling I could push it to 3.8GHz even.

I look back on it, and their onboard sound system. Remember Sound Storm, integrated into nvidia nforce2 boards? That was better then sound blaster cards to have. It rocked... I guess I am a fan boy of nvidia but then again if the experience with ATI wouldn't of happened I'd be going with the one faster. I've seen their drivers and they haven't changed since I owned an ATI card much. Still crappy.

                  Re: ATi 2900XT Benchmarks (reliable :p )

Meh. This launch was all about AMD/ATI staying relevant. The $409 launch price does that. The fact that nVidia can suck the last drop of performance out of a five year old fab process and bolt DX10 alongside it, and keep the whole shebang from melting tells me that they've got a few tricks up their sleeve, too.

The next steps down on the AMD/ATI's 2x00 will most likely be the gpu's of choice for OEM's. They're cooler (passive cooling in a respectably decent gpu? woot!) and pre-production parts are shipping w/out a discrete cable, meaning they'll run off the 45W that the PCI-E port provides...meaning cheaper psu's for the OEM's...meaning that ATI will probably manage to call their new fab a marginal success and be working on 65nm gen 2 (or 3) and 45nm gen 1 perhaps before nVidia launches their first 65nm part.

If AMD/ATI learn some lessons and continue to shrink their fab--in a TIMELY process--they'll stick around.

If not we'll be left with a choice between Intel for a CPU or nothing, and nVidia or nothing for a gpu.

Gosh...that's...err...not a whole lot of competition. Good thing we know that neither of those benevolent, consumer-oriented companies would jack up the prices if they were the only game in town.

Oh well, I wanna play too:

ATI = TeH suxxors!!! nVid = teh Roxx0rs!!! woot!!! woot!!!

Now may I have a 1337ster lollipop too?

So? I haven't upgraded yet. I've had this system for about 2 years. I bought what was top of the line then, and can't afford to upgrade. Sorry I can't have my mommy and daddy pay for all of my computer stuff like everyone else. I have bills to pay, and quite frankly, having my computer upgraded with the latest stuff every 6 months is at the bottom of my list.

And you know whats suprising? A lot of other people haven't upgraded either.

You believe what search engines tell you? Quick, the ocean is drowning!!! Let's see what wikipedia has to say!

I don't need to research the answer, because I know it. You obviously weren't in the tech section a while back when Core 2 Duo started coming out. Several people (other than me) were here can back me up on the fact that Tom's Hardware had some of the most biased reviews for C2D (aka unicore core) that many people had ever seen.

I don't need reassurance. I want Matdef and Wreck to laugh along with me at the ignorance.

Basically, those parts are sipping power because they're already 65nm. This new gpu is good, but at 80nm it just can't compete. Drop it down to 65nm, and we have a serious contender.

                        Until then, it's a joke.

those alt tab problems and hanging up almost sound maybe like one of your ram sticks is going bad but i do agree the catylist does sometimes hang for a second when making changes. try swapping out for different ram if you have any laying around, see if it helps.

myself i run at 1920x1200 on a 24" sony FW-900; probably the one your using because i think its the only 24" crt there is; at 85 htz 4x aa and 16x af in BF2 and i dont have any issues but currently im on two x1900 cards in crossfire so that might help in the resolution department.

ive had plenty of ati and nvida stuff but for me right now i just couldn't bring myself to pay $800 for one ultra and then have a crossfire motherboard not living up to its potential. im limited to my crossfire mobo and anyway you cut it i still would of paid more for two GTS's even and new sli board, GTX's a even different story.

im no idiot though, i mean if i dont see some significant 3dmark score gains i will return them for one 8800 ultra, im all about the best performance for the dollar and usually the best performance period, this motherboard is realy the only thing hindering me in my decision to go sli. i can pull over 19k on 3dmark 05 right now and 11k on 3dmark 06 and these are only x1900 cards with my cpu oced to 3.4 so i better see some big gains or back to zipzoomfly they go and an 8800 ultra will be on the way, heheh.

No, I saw you age and laughed anyway.

and whats funny, is I prolly make twice what you do. I still keep up on the latest hardware and software, as much as anyone else who is an enthusiast.

I vote we change his name to Flanker! Who's with me?

He's just the same, showing reviews that he wants to show us, and off of slightly baised websites.
