wireless can still be hit and miss--very important to do just a little homework to make sure what you have/what you're buying can be seen by the distro.
D-Link WNA-2330 works flawlessly for me at 802.11g speeds on an oobergraded (1gb pc2100:rock: ) compaq n610c, 2.0ghz. Ubuntu is as fast for general productivity, dna sequence analysis, presentations, and office stuff on this $250 ebay lappy as on my ~$1300 dual-core/2gb setup at home. I take it on the road with me and other people want to know how I get around Powerpoint so fast, how I get the embedded objects to work, etc...and I tell them that, unfortunately, they are going to have to stop paying $400 for Office and $200 for Window$ to get better, faster, more stable, and easier to use software that they can custom tailor to suit their needs.
Still, for games, M$ and the corporate farms still rule the roost, but we're getting quickly to a point where being able to do everything work-related on a ~$300 computer might kill off computer gaming if the sole purpose of buying ~$1,500 worth of parts to get a game as visually entertaining as can be had on a $300 xbox. Then again, people have been saying that as far back as when I was running Star Control on my dad's $2,000 pc with two 512k floppies and no HD, in glorious EGA.
My only gripe with Ubuntu is that the auto-update keeps on insisting that I need to upgrade from firefox 2.x to 1.5x.
