Think you can substantially upgrade on $600. I did. You must scrap your current MOBO, RAM, GPU, and CPU and keep everything else in order to keep things in you budget though. My problem was my PSU. Little old 380W kept me from reaching very far. On the other hand, if you aren't looking toward high, high, high end parts, then a >400W psu that has been stable for you up 'til now should suffice to power a good (not GREAT) upgrade.

I bought a little emachines desktop (celeron d, 512 mb, onboard video..) for 200 bucks. Then, for Christmas, I bought a new mobo, e6300, 7600gt, and 1 gig of ram, all for under like 450. Kept my old case, hard drive and power supply, and I was set. So, it is possible.

till around 1k usd. 1256mb of ram wont do much. get a pci-e gpu, mobo and processor. i might give u $500 if u stop wrting in caps. driving me insane. decreases my ability to read.

Or you could find a nice deal and get dual 4200's, 2 GB RAM, and a 512 mb X1600 for $600....too bad I didnt have 600 bucks on me..

x1600's are dogs, closer to x1300's. x1650's adopted much of the architecture of the x1800s when they assumed that spot in the "mid end" category, which has since been supplanted by x1950gt/pro.

X1650's are much, much better than x1600's, just a little above or below a 7600gt depending on the game.
