Well, it wouldn't matter if you had 4TB of RAM if it were at floppy disk speeds, would it? :P


As for the whole 32-bit 4GB limit, it's incorrect. Each process can address a maximum of 4GB, not the whole OS.


With 16GB or more of RAM, you could in effect create a ramdisk on boot with your whole OS partition and have that ramdisk re-written on shutdown - the only thing is that it'll be a real ***** to do the latter and boot-up times would be phenomenally long.


We need solid state drives. Bye-bye loading times, and even the need for RAM whatsoever.

XP x32 (and the x32 flavors of Vista) are limited to 4 gig (physical & virtual combined), it is a limitation of x32 OS's. By default XP can only use 2gig for accually running programs and will use any more than that to page file to. There is a registy hack that will let XP x32 use 3gig for running programs. The reason some hardware configs will only see 3.5 is that some of the memory is reserved for the system.

Win XP x64 and the x64 flavors of Vista however can handel up to 128 gigs of physical (if you could find a MOBO) & 16 terabytes of virtual RAM.
